DeSantis Attacks Trump Yet Again, Leaving Florida on the Edge

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is coming after Trump in a new way.

He's now emphasizing his law-and-order records during his first month as a presidential contender.

He touted the increased compensation for new law enforcement officers and his signed legislation that makes it easier to apply the death penalty and mandates death sentences for child rapists, which the Supreme Court ban in certain situations.

DeSantis' criticism of former President Donald Trump's First Step Act has been added to his repertoire.

The First Step Act is a criminal justice reform program approved by Congress and signed into law in December 2018 to address long-standing injustices in the criminal justice system.

Although some conservatives disagree with him, DeSantis stated on the campaign trail that he would abolish that statute if elected.

As the presidential race progresses, this has led to a policy confrontation between DeSantis and Trump on the law-and-order front.

Team DeSantis is still pressing the matter. As the national spokesperson for the pro-DeSantis Never Back Down super PAC earlier this week, Steve Cortes, a former assistant to President Trump, claimed in an opinion piece that in signing the First Step Act, "Trump acquiesced to the lobbying of Hollywood celebrities like Kim Kardashian as well as his liberal New York son-in-law."

DeSantis backed it when the bill was debated in the U.S. Congress in May 2018. But he left the nation's capital, Washington, DC, and sought the Florida governor's race.

Trump's campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung tweeted last month, "Lyin' Ron. He voted for the First Step Act. It would be a shame if there were a video of him praising it in an interview with a local FL television station."

A few days after the governor declared his candidacy for president on May 24, DeSantis brought up the First Step Act on the Ben Shapiro Show.

What do you think about the escalating clashes between DeSantis and Trump?
