Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is defending his poor popularity ratings relative to front-runner former President Donald Trump early in the 2024 Republican primary.

He has dismissed his second-place performance thus far as a media fabrication. DeSantis seems to be using the good old Trumpist argument, labeling everything unfavorable as a lie.

Florida Governor asserted that recent unfavorable news was "narratives" created by a mainstream media determined to destroy his chances of becoming president because the media "does not want me to be the nominee."

"I think they've tried to create a narrative that somehow the race is over," DeSantis said.

DeSantis has been questioned about his position in the primary field in numerous interviews over the past few days. He comfortably won reelection last year and became one of his party's most recognizable figures.

DeSantis says he didn't anticipate rapid success when he declared his candidacy for the White House in May.

According to FiveThirtyEight's latest polling survey, DeSantis is the second most popular candidate, next to Trump by over 30 points nationally.

Even though DeSantis has up his campaigning, the deficit hasn't closed in over a month. That number is an improvement for DeSantis since May.

Trump currently leads in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, though not by as much.

The same news reports that DeSantis appeared to dismiss include quotes from his supporters concerned about his campaign's state.

On a Twitter livestream earlier this month, Steve Cortes, the national spokesman for the pro-DeSantis political organization Never Back Down, stated that the governor is "way behind," referring to Trump as the "runaway front-runner."

According to Cortes, Trump's indictments—which he denies—led to increased polling and support, which prompted Republican voters to "rally" around the outgoing president.
