Do You Want DeSantis to Become Trump's Vice President?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dismissed the thoughts of serving as vice president for Donald Trump in 2024 should the former president wins the nomination.

"I'm not a No. 2 guy," he says.

DeSantis believes he can do more than being the vice president.

"I think I'm a leader. Governor of Florida, I've been able to accomplish a lot. I probably could do more staying there than being V.P., which has no authority."

Trump's spokesperson Steven Cheung promptly shot down the notion that the former president would even consider DeSantis, a former supporter now opposing him for the Republican nomination, as a running mate.

"Ron DeSantis isn't anybody's guy. He's not 'the guy.' He's just 'a guy','" Cheung said.

It is far too early to predict the Republican vice presidential nominee, as no primary vote has been cast.

Some supporters of DeSantis have expressed their desire for the considerably younger DeSantis to run with Trump at rallies in the early primary states.

However, running on the same ticket together would be logistically challenging for the two Florida men.

The Electoral College is prohibited from electing a president and vice president who are both residents of the same state per the 12th Amendment to the Constitution.

Trump would therefore lose Florida's 30 electoral votes if he chose DeSantis or another Florida resident like Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who is also running.

A solution to this is for Trump to return to New York, where he was a resident before moving to Florida, in preparation for the 2020 presidential race.

Typically, presidential contenders choose a running mate to bolster their appeal to a particular demographic group or in a key swing state.

However, the former president's advisors have often said they don't believe Trump requires assistance from a No. 2.
