Energy business titans with deep pockets are now ditching Trump to support his biggest rivals in the upcoming presidential election.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is the most notable rival who is eating away at Trump's campaign donations. Even though Trump still leads in small-donor fundraising, many of his previous backers have switched to other candidates. More donors are following suit.

The most recent campaign finance filings show that oil and gas tycoon Harold Hamm contributed to Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.

Midland Energy Inc. CEO Syed Javaid Anwar and pipeline magnate Kelcy Warren donated to DeSantis as well.

Jeffery Hildebrand, a multibillionaire energy executive, supports North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum's candidacy.

DeSantis, Mike Pence, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie all received donations from coal executive Joe Craft and his wife Kelly, who formerly served as ambassador to the United Nations under Trump.

None of those affluent energy contributors, however, has given Trump a sizable donation for his campaign in 2024.

This year, cases involving the alleged payment of hush money to a porn star and the handling of confidential documents led to the indictment of the former president.

As the race is still underway, deep-pocketed contributors frequently give to numerous candidates early in the GOP presidential primary.

However, early donations from a few of Trump's former allies in the oil sector indicate that they want to support the Republican challenger in the 2024 race.

According to a Wall Street Journal study, over 5,000 donors to Trump's 2020 reelection campaign instead supported his Republican rivals this year.

Some donations to candidate-affiliated fundraising committees that are not required to declare until the end of the month are not covered by the most recent filings.
