Former president Donald Trump is no stranger to legal battles.

He's been a subject in over 4,000 legal cases in the last few decades.

The most recent indictment marks a historical event. Donald Trump is cruising ahead in the Republican primaries while facing dozens of criminal charges. Trump may take the presidency this time around, making this moment even more historic.

Can he really become the next president?

The US Constitution does not prohibit those convicted of a felony to run for the presidency.

However 14th Amendment may cause severe problems for Trump if he continues his campaign.

According to that provision, a person who has taken an oath to the United States, as Trump did upon taking office, and engages in "insurrection or rebellion" against the nation cannot hold office.

Legally, the allegations against Trump do not prevent him from pursuing his presidential campaign.

After his initial court appearance in Washington, he will continue his campaign as usual.

Trump is sure to jump on the allegations and try to use them politically to his advantage, just as he did after his other two indictments.

With rare exceptions, Trump's Republican opponents in the run for president have refrained from criticizing the former president using criminal accusations.

Financially, the costs will likely increase expenditure for legal fees. Trump's political action group has already spent $40 million on legal fees this year as his campaign continues to drain funds.

Trump would likely be unable to cast a ballot in the 2024 election if he were found guilty before election day. He is a registered voter in Florida, where it is unlawful for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to vote while they are incarcerated.

Those convicted must complete their sentence before they are eligible to vote.
