DeSantis' Stunning 'Declaration of Economic Independence' Shakes Up Campaign

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has started presenting some real economic ideas.
DeSantis revealed his economic platform, a wide-ranging combination of populist and conservative tenets that warns corporate boardrooms, government bureaucracy, China, and President Joe Biden's domestic policy.
The program, which his 2024 presidential campaign is dubbing the "Declaration of Economic Independence," nationalizes many of the issues the Republican governor cited about Biden's leadership of the nation.
Severing economic connections with China is at the top of the list; this goal is shared with former President Donald Trump, his main challenger for the GOP nominee.
DeSantis is recognized for his focus on conflicts in the culture wars but less on everyday problems.
The release of his economic platform coincides with DeSantis' transition away from basing his campaign on Florida's past electoral successes and toward outlining for Republicans his vision for the nation.
It comes after he restarted his presidential campaign due to depleting funds and worries from donors and allies that his message has not yet persuaded GOP voters.
As he has previously pledged, DeSantis would also eliminate government bureaucracies that he believes are hindering small businesses and the economy to benefit corporations. However, his proposal did not specify which agencies would be eliminated.
DeSantis also suggested a ban on individual stock trading by members of Congress and executive branch officials, leaning toward more populist views.
As president, DeSantis promised to engage with the business sector to advance apprenticeship and vocational training programs, raise individual tax rates, and start a "purge" of lobbyist-pushed tax breaks and loopholes.
The Florida governor also promised not to hesitate to use his veto pen regarding government programs "wrought with waste, fraud, and abuse."
