DeSantis' Explosive Warning: Trump Supporters Branded 'Listless Vessels' Amidst Brewing GOP Battle

    2023-08-24

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stood by his weekend warning to Republicans who back former President Donald Trump not to be "listless vessels."

DeSantis stated that Trump's supporters were more devoted to their allegiance to the former president than conservatism.

"If all we are is listless vessels that are just supposed to follow whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning, that's not going to be a durable movement," DeSantis said.

The remarks of DeSantis, who is trailing the former president by a wide margin in the polls for the GOP presidential nomination, did not sit well with Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross.

"It's interesting because they're all singing from the same songbook because you can't call someone 'listless' when you are pushing an anti-equity agenda," Cross said.

She pointed out that DeSantis has campaigned for laws and policies that significantly impact schoolchildren and the progress of Latinos, Blacks, and undocumented people in receiving the protections they deserve.

Opponents accuse DeSantis of promoting an "anti-woke" agenda to downplay or erase Black history or accomplishments.

The Trump campaign immediately criticized DeSantis' remarks, senior adviser Jason Miller likening them to a statement made by then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, in which she declared that half of Trump's voters belong in a "basket of deplorables."

In a FoxNews interview, DeSantis responded to the criticism by noting that one of the "big problems" with the Republican Party was politicians not "following through" on their commitments.

DeSantis claimed that his comment was in response to those members of Congress who have called him a "RINO," or "Republican In Name Only."

Members of the MAGA crowd were incensed by the governor's comments about "listless vessels," which led Bryan Griffin, the governor's press secretary, to reiterate the governor's claims.

"The dishonest media refuses to report the facts – Donald Trump and some congressional endorsers are 'listless vessels.'" Griffin said.

What is your take on the tension between allegiance to a leader and dedication to principles?
