Trump's Calculated Gamble: The Debate Dilemma Unveiled

Former President Donald Trump claimed he would "therefore not be doing the debates!" because of his overwhelming lead in GOP primary surveys.

Trump's choice has significant benefits and drawbacks for him and his competitors.

Whether you like Trump or not, contesting the political reasoning behind his choice is difficult. He has a commanding advantage over the GOP competition.

What does it serve him to argue? If he took the stage, all his competitors would come after him, and he might take an unanticipated verbal blow.

With his large survey margins, the risks of the debate outweigh the benefits for Trump.

The former president, known for loving the limelight, deliberately withdraws from a significant political event.

However, Trump's absence shall be significant as there is hype and interest in debates that might allow his competitors to break the news on their own terms.

If Trump truly wants to skip every debate, the scenario could become increasingly challenging as time goes on.

This is a decision made at this time in a position of strength. However, what if one or more of his competitors pose a significant challenge in the coming months?

Then, Trump would be forced to make the unpalatable decision of abandoning his no-debates policy or allowing such rivals to go uncontested at subsequent debates.

Since the campaign began, Trump's opponents have needed help being heard.

Even the former president's criminal prosecutions, developments that would be politically disastrous for anyone else but him, have kept him in the spotlight.

Not just DeSantis or the ascent of Ramaswamy might profit from this. Former vice president Mike Pence, former ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, and Scott are all respectable politicians who are about to have a significant opportunity to influence the political landscape.

The event itself won't be the focus of a single Trump storm, as happened during the first debate of the 2016 election campaign when he sparred angrily with moderator Megyn Kelly, who was then working for Fox News.

Some of his challengers, including former governors of New Jersey, Chris Christie and Arkansas Asa Hutchinson, have vigorously criticized him.

Others have gone out of their way to avoid alienating his fans, including DeSantis, Biotech businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Haley, and Sen. Tim Scott.

    However, neither strategy has worked.

Do you think Trump is wisely protecting his position, or is he missing a chance to engage with competitors and the public?
