Hurricane Chaos: DeSantis's Tough Stance Against Looters Raises Eyebrows

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly warned of pillagers rumored to be prowling through Hurricane Idalia's ravaged areas: "you loot, we shoot."

The governor mentioned seeing a sign that read "youloop, we shoot" in response to the terrible Hurricane Ian, which hit Florida in September 2022 and killed more than 140 people.

This raised the phrase as a message of law and order amid storm-driven turmoil.

"We are going to hold you accountable from a law enforcement perspective at a minimum, and it could even be worse than that depending on what's behind that door," said DeSantis.

DeSantis made the comments in response to attempted lootings at Steinhatchee, a town of 537 people in Taylor County, Florida.

DeSantis continued by calling it "ridiculous" that someone would try to loot immediately following the hurricane's devastation of the region.

Additionally, DeSantis said it days after three Black residents of Jacksonville lost their lives in a horrific shooting with racist overtones.

DeSantis has held several press conferences all day to inform the public of the storm's development.

He has temporarily suspended his presidential campaign to help Florida respond to Idalia.

Idalia, a Category 3 hurricane that made landfall on Wednesday morning, left the Sunshine State at midday and invaded southeast Georgia.

Even though he is not officially campaigning, managing the storm response will be a crucial test for his candidacy since it will put his leadership and decision-making as the governor of his state in the public eye.

Thousands of people have lost electric power due to the storm, which is also projected to cause millions of dollars worth of damage to the state.

Since Idalia made landfall, at least two individuals have perished in auto accidents, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
