In her TV series Rebel in Devil’s Shackle, YiNGJiE faced the challenge of portraying the complex relationship between Nina Morgan and Max Luther, who come from starkly different backgrounds. Nina’s once-privileged life stands in sharp contrast to the dangerous world she enters with Max. YiNGJiE’s design sought to encapsulate this tension by merging themes of luxury and peril, reflecting the intricate dynamics of their relationship.

A key aspect of her approach was the extensive research she conducted into mafia culture, opulent environments tainted by corruption, and the darker side of high society. This meticulous groundwork was essential in ensuring that every detail of Max Luther’s world—from his luxurious yet foreboding interiors to the grand but ominous meeting places—accurately represented his dual persona as both a wealthy elite and a ruthless criminal.

To portray the darker aspects of Max’s life, particularly the settings for deals and confrontations, YiNGJiE skillfully blended rich textures with muted tones. Materials like polished wood, deep leather, and gleaming metals were used to create an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and menacing, enhanced by shadowy lighting. This design approach was intended to evoke a sense of hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface, intensifying the show’s themes of power and control.

YiNGJiE’s thorough research and creative insight were distilled into a comprehensive mood board, which became the visual blueprint for the production. This mood board was more than just a collection of images; it was a carefully crafted narrative that illustrated the evolution of the show’s visual style. It included color schemes that mirrored the characters’ emotional journeys, textures that echoed the harshness of their circumstances, and symbolic elements that hinted at broader themes of power, control, and rebellion.

One of the major challenges YiNGJiE encountered was designing the drug dealer’s secret hideout. The aim was to transform an ordinary space into a convincing underground lair that felt both dangerous and authentic. By using set dressing techniques like hidden compartments, worn furniture, and dim, flickering lighting, she infused the environment with a sense of decay and secrecy. Layered textures, such as peeling wallpaper and exposed brick, were deliberately chosen to suggest neglect and danger, while dirt, graffiti, and concealed spaces hinted at a history of illicit activities.

Given the fast-paced production schedule, sets needed to be quickly arranged and reconfigured for various scenes. YiNGJiE tackled this by adopting a modular design approach, allowing key elements of the set to be easily adapted or repurposed for different settings. For instance, a lavish dining room could be rapidly transformed into a tense negotiation space by simply altering the practicals and props.

Rebel in Devil’s Shackle has garnered over 8 million views on DramaBox App, ranking as one of the platform’s top three shows. YiNGJiE’s work on the series highlights her exceptional talent for crafting immersive worlds that are both captivating and intense, further solidifying her reputation as a production designer who can vividly bring any story to life through her visual artistry.
