Heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service on Monday morning to issue flood warnings lasting until 1 p.m. that day for Shawnee, Douglas, Osage, Lyon and Wabaunsee counties.

Locations expected to see flooding included southern Topeka, Berryton, Richland, Clinton, Carbondale, Overbrook, Scranton, Osage City, Burlingame, Allen, Admire and Bushong, said the website of the weather service's Topeka office.

As many as 6 inches of rain had fallen in the area involved, the weather service said.

It issued a separate flood warning lasting until just after midnight for Salt Creek near Lyndon in Osage County and another lasting until late Tuesday morning for the Marais Des Cygnes River above Reading on Lyon County.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, Topeka had officially received 1.63 inches of rain.

    Heat expected Monday and Tuesday

Meanwhile, the weather service had northeast Kansas under a heat advisory for Monday and Tuesday.

It predicted heat indices Monday would top out at 107 at Abilene, 102 at Manhattan, 101 at Emporia, 94 at Topeka and 91 at Lawrence.

The weather service predicted heat indices Tuesday would reach 107 degrees at Topeka, Manhattan and Garnett and 109 at Lawrence and Abilene.

Slight chance of severe weather predicted for Tuesday

Forecasters predicted a slight chance of severe weather Tuesday for most of northeast Kansas, with a moderate chance for severe weather expected for the state's far northeast corner.

The weather service forecast a 60% to 80% chance thunderstorms would develop in the late afternoon or evening.

"Supercell storms during the afternoon could contain large hail," said the website of the weather service's Topeka office. "Later into the evening, damaging winds and heavy rain become greater concerns. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out as storms develop."
