    How much cash Kansas congressional candidates have for primary clash

    Kansas voters could see an escalation in political ads in the next couple of weeks.

    Candidates vying for the open congressional seat representing Topeka and much of eastern Kansas collectively have hundreds of thousands of dollars they could spend on their campaigns before Election Day.

    New filings w ith the Federal Election Commission show how much money Kansas' 2nd Congressional District have taken in and spent ahead of the Aug. 6 primary election. The FEC filings, which were due Monday, reveal quarterly finances for the period ending June 30 .

    U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan., currently represents the district, but he opted not to run for reelection, leading to contested Republican and Democratic primaries. LaTurner's decision was announced in April , so this is the first quarterly campaign finance report for the candidates. The next quarterly report isn't due until Oct. 15.

    FEC filings for top Republican contenders

    The three top Republican contenders are former Attorney General Derek Schmidt, former LaTurner staffer Jeff Kahrs and former Kansas Livestock Association president Shawn Tiffany.

    • Schmidt reported $430,000 in receipts, $104,000 in disbursements and $326,000 cash on hand.
    • Kahrs reported $408,000 in receipts — including a $300,000 loan from himself — $42,000 in disbursements and $366,000 cash on hand.
    • Tiffany's amended report reported $272,000 in receipts, $160,000 in disbursements and $112,000 cash on hand.
    • Also running are Michael Ogle and Chad Young, for whom the FEC didn't have reports as of Thursday morning.

    FEC filings for Democrats

    The two Democratic contenders for the 2nd Congressional District are former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda and community organizer Matt Kleinmann.

    • Boyda reported $57,000 in receipts — including a $49,000 loan from herself — $8,000 in disbursements and $48,000 cash on hand.
    • Kleinmann reported $32,000 in receipts, $4,000 in disbursements and $29,000 cash on hand.
