TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Hotter days are upon us, and energy bills are on the rise.

KSNT 27 News spoke with Evergy on ways to save money throughout the summer heat. Evergy said that your thermostat may be set too cool, and having the perfect temperature could help you save money on your next electricity bill.

So what is the perfect temperature anyway?

“It’s so wonderfully unique” Olympic volunteer from Topeka talks about experience so far in Paris

“The EPA and a lot of sources say 78 degrees is a good temperature,” Evergy Director of Cooperate Communications Gina Penzig said. “So that’s a great starting point. You and your family may have different needs.”

Having a smart thermostat can help regulate temperatures in your home. You can set it higher while your away, and it also prevents humidity from building up.

To make sure the cool air you’re paying for isn’t escaping, check for air leaks.

“Feeling around the edges of your windows, the edges of your door to see if there is any heat coming in, ” Penzig said. “And then blocking that.”

And you might consider changing the way you are making meals at home. As well as, how you use your electronics to limit extra heat.

“Making sure you are turning off any electronics when not in use. And then when you are cooking, thinking about smaller even having sandwiches and salads so you aren’t turning on the oven or stove,” Penzig said.

‘Exciting and amazing’ opportunity for Holton business

Evergy says you can enroll in an average payment plan to help afford higher demand during the summer.

“What that does is it takes the average use for the past year and your bill is based on the average use, ” Penzig said. “So you don’t see as much seasonal fluctuation so the summer bills maybe are a little bit easier to budget for.”

The energy company says now is a great time to make sure your air filters are clean, as this will help keep your air conditioner running well.
