Select US Open 2024: 3 Players Favored To Win The Slam

The US Open is considered one of the toughest Grand Slams to win. It has been one of those Grand Slams with the least dominance from the 'Big 3." Many new Grand Slam champions, such as Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Theim, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Marin Cilic, have secured their first and only major wins in New York.

It's been a historic Olympic Games in men's tennis recently, with players representing their countries and finally clinching their desired medals. However, they don't have much time to celebrate with the year's final major around the corner. Tennis is back in full flow at the National Bank Open on Tuesday (August 6). However, due to the busy schedules at the Paris Olympics, many top-tier players have withdrawn from the Masters 1000 event. The road to the US Open starts now. Who will this tournament?

    3. Jannik Sinner

World No.1 Jannik Sinner has arguably the best platform to prepare himself for the US Open. He begins his National Bank Open title defense this week in Canada. He notched the first Masters 1000 title win of his career last year when he beat Alex de Minaur in the final. With so many top players out due to the Paris Olympics, this is a golden chance for Sinner to return to the winner's circle and show the tennis world his credentials again.

The Italian will be bidding to become only the third male player in this century to win the Australian Open and the US Open in the same season. Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in five sets to win the Melbourne crown in January. His maiden Grand Slam helped him to become World No.1 for the first time in his career in June. However, he has been battling a virus since losing in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

    2. Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz would be happy not to see the tennis courts for a few days after a hectic summer. The Spaniard has won his first French Open title, defended his Wimbledon title, and landed his first Olympic silver medal in Paris. With so many matches under his belt, Alcaraz has taken a well-deserved break from the game by withdrawing from the National Bank Open. However, he is scheduled to return at the Cincinnati Masters.

Alcaraz will use the Western and Southern Open as a blueprint for his US Open campaign. The Spaniard won the first of his four Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows two years ago, beating Casper Ruud in four sets in the final. However, he lost to Medvedev in the semifinals last year. Alcaraz knows that a third Grand Slam title in the US would almost confirm him as the year-end World No. 1.

    1. Novak Djokovic

Usually, a player who has not won the first three Grand Slams is not considered the biggest candidate to win the US Open. However, this logic simply doesn't apply to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian legend finally achieved his dream of winning the elusive Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games with a straight-set win over Alcaraz in the final. It was Djokovic's first title of the year.

Like Alcaraz, the former World No. 1 has skipped the National Bank Open. Djokovic will also return to action at Cincinnati, where he is the defending champion. After that, he will head to the US Open, where he will bid for a 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic hasn't had the best season of his career in 2024, but he could end it on a winning note with a triumph at the 2024 US Open.
