Major League Baseball has lost one of its most dedicated pioneers today. Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’s top man has reached his last days serving the MLB community, players, and fans alike. Billy Bean had been in his role for the last 10 years with the sport that he grew up playing and loved. He also fought a battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia for over a year.

Billy Bean Has Passed Away At The Age Of 60

The Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion chairman plays a major part in providing education and important information to players around the world, in this case, the sport of Major League Baseball. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, Billy Bean played for three organizations: the Detroit Tigers (1987), was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and later went on to play for the San Diego Padres from 1993 to 1995.

Billy Bean Was The Second MLB Player To Come Out

During his early stages of life, Billy Bean struggled with his identity after his father passed away in 1991. He lived with another male, with whom he tried to stay in the shadows as their relationship started to grow. Bean had a difficult time telling the truth because, at a young age, he was not accepted by everyone.

In those days, it was harder for people to express their feelings or thoughts about who they were. Glenn Burke was initially the first Major League Baseball player in 1982 to admit that he, in fact, did not take an interest in the opposite sex. After the news broke, Billy Bean saw it as a way to reveal his true identity to the outside world, which was later publicized in 1999 as he told his family and loved ones.

Billy Bean’s Role In Major League Baseball

As the world changed, Billy Bean felt more comfortable and wanted to help others who dealt with similar situations. In 2014, he was given the role of an Ambassador For Inclusion. He had been away from baseball for 19 years, retiring back in 1995. Bean was put into a position to support every individual involved in baseball.

This included players, coaches, managers, umpires, and employees with a duty to provide equal opportunity for all within the workplace throughout the sport. In December of last year, Bean revealed that he was diagnosed with Leukemia. In the midst of telling other MLB organizations and those close to him, another professional player voiced themselves, and he goes by the name of TJ House.

Professional baseball is steadily evolving as time goes on. Rules have not only changed the layout of the game, but players have also had more freedom to be themselves. People criticize athletes for being a certain way, but it is about how that person feels on a personal level. Many aspects of preference or sexuality are not brought up in different instances.

It is not allowed to be discussed publicly in everyday conversations. It is only right that each individual can speak on the topic if they feel it is necessary. Billy Bean did many good things for Major League Baseball, and this is still in motion. Bean always wanted to make a difference and let people know that they matter.

Since being the vice president of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Billy Bean’s last words were, I just think that each and every year, each and every day, I’m in this seat, I am more humbled by the opportunity to bring people together.” One thing is for certain: Billy Bean will not only be remembered for who he was but also for the impact that he made on others throughout his time in Major League Baseball and on earth.
