Afghanistan Batter Ihsanullah Janat Banned For 5 Years

Sad news for all Afghan cricket fans! On Wednesday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced that top-order batsman Ihsanullah Janat had been barred from ‘all forms of cricket activities’ for five years. Well, the reason behind his termination is corruption and the restriction is effective immediately. It created a wave of disappointment among AFG fans. According to the board, violations of the anti-corruption codes of the ICC and ACB occurred earlier this year during the second Kabul Premier League.

A five-year ban from all cricket-related activities has been imposed upon him in light of this breach. Also, Ihsanullah Janat has acknowledged his role in corrupt practices and admitted to the charges. The ACB’s anti-corruption team has been looking into three other players for their involvement in corrupt actions. “Decisions on their involvement will be taken after their guilt is established,” according to the ACB.

Ihsanullah Janat’s International Career

Ihsanullah, 26, who was playing for the Shamshad Eagles in the Kabul Premier League 2024, scored 72 runs at an average of 18. And his strike rate was 150 in four innings. The team finished last in the six-team league table since they won just one of their last five games. Ihsanullah Janat also represented Afghanistan in 20 international matches in all three formats. Ihsanullah made his debut in an ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare in February 2017.

He has now taken part in 15 more One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and scored 307 runs at an average of 21.92. Moreover, has also played in one Twenty20 International, scoring 20 runs off of 14 balls. And three Tests, amassing 110 runs at an average of 22,000 runs. His final appearance for his nation came in that June 2022 Twenty20 International match in Harare against Zimbabwe.

Nawroz Mangal, Ihsanullah Janat’s brother, was a national icon during the early years of cricket’s international circuit. Thus, his family has strong ties to the sport, during the 2009 World Cup qualifiers. Nawroz led the national team as captain and again when they qualified for the 2010 T20 World Cup. It made them the first Affiliate nation to achieve ODI status. Despite Janat’s corruption in a vital match, Shamshad Eagles finished bottom in the six-team competition with just one victory in five games.

Janat’s Ban’s Effect on Afghan Cricket

Later, Shafiqullah Shafaq, a former member of the Afghan national cricket team. He was banned from the game for six years in 2020 due to unethical behavior. No doubt, Afghanistan has made great strides in the international arena. They defeated previous winners Sri Lanka, England, and Pakistan in the ODI World Cup last year.

Their greatest moment was during the Twenty20 World Cup in June when they qualified for the semi-finals by defeating both Australia and New Zealand. After making his debut for the Afghanistan cricket team in 2017, Ihsanullah Janat went on to play in three Tests, sixteen ODIs, and one T20I. Many believed that Janat’s career began difficult because he was given his debut at an early age given his age.

This is not only a severe setback for Ihsanullah Janat, but also for cricket in Afghanistan overall. Additionally, since the KPL is making a lot of effort to expand and flourish, this ban will cause reliability problems for it. After Ihsanullah Janat’s recent confession of improperly influencing matches to affect the result, his three co-players are under investigation and may join him in banishing.
