Team USA rallied from behind and took down Team Serbia 95-91 to move on to the gold medal game. The United States were down by as many as 17 points, but they chipped away and got within striking distance in the 4th quarter. Big-time buckets down the stretch from Steph Curry, Lebron James, and Kevin Durant were key in the United States’ furious comeback.

The USA had not been tested at all in the 2024 Paris Olympics heading into Thursday’s game with Serbia. They showed heart in coming back after being down nearly the whole game. The United States now has the opportunity to secure its 5th straight Olympic gold medal on Saturday versus France.

USA Survives Against Serbia

Heading into the game, the United States was favored to win by 16 points over Serbia. The 2024 USA Olympic team has been touted as arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled. They showed why in their first 4 games, where they dominated everyone. Today, they nearly were on the wrong side of one of the biggest upsets in basketball history. Fortunately, they had big-time performances from Steph Curry, Lebron James, and Joel Embiid to stave off Nikola Jokic and Serbia.

Steph Curry went into inferno mode and dropped 36 points while nailing 9 three pointers. He hit the go ahead 3 pointer to put the USA up 87-86 with 2:24 left. Lebron James added a triple double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Then there was Joel Embiid. Embiid, who has been heavily criticized, had some big baskets. He ended up with 19 points.

The US can now take a huge sigh of relief. That was way too close for comfort. Head coach Steve Kerr will now have to lock in his squad for one more game. They are just a single win away from leaving Paris with a gold medal. We’ll see if they can finish the job.

France Versus USA For Gold Medal

Next up for the United States is France on Saturday. France won their semi final matchup against Germany earlier in the day 73-69. France is led by generational talent, 20 year old Victor Wembanyama. Wemby has struggled in the knockout stages so far, but his teammates have picked him up.

Being the host country of the Olympics, France will be extra motivated to win this gold medal. The United States will be big favorites once again to come out on top, but today told us that anything can happen. USA versus France with a gold medal on the line will be must watch TV.
