Minecraft 1.22 Could Revitalize The Franchise

In 2011, the sandbox survival game Minecraft was officially released. Thirteen years later, Minecraft is the second most purchased game after Tetris with over 300 million copies sold worldwide. Features of the upcoming 'Minecraft 1.22' update have recently been hinted at by the game's development team, Mojang Studios, but the news has ruffled some feathers within the community. Although updates to the game are always highly anticipated, many fans remain pessimistic after so many failed promises by the developers. With the recent news, however, 'Minecraft 1.22' could breathe new air into Minecraft if done right.

    Developers Fail To Deliver

Over the years, it has become clear that Mojang Studios' ambitions may be their downfall. It all started at Minecraft Live 2020 where they announced the majorly anticipated ‘Caves And Cliffs’ update. The next year, Mojang stated this update would be split into two parts due to the complexity and size of the update, along with team health. Although ‘Caves And Cliffs’ was technically two parts, multiple features promised in this update were released far after both were released. To this day, some features promised by the developers, like bundles, have still not been added to the game. Fireflies and the overhauled old-growth birch forest have not been added either.

Although Minecraft's recent updates have added unprecedented amounts of content, Google search results show that, over the years, Minecraft updates have experienced a downward trend- meaning that fans are growing less interested in the game's developments. This is likely due to the failed delivery of many features showcased during Minecraft Live and the highly controversial Mob Votes. Minecraft is beloved by many, but if 'Minecraft 1.22' continues the trend of disappointment, the game is expected to fade into irrelevance once again as it did in the mid-2010s.

The Mob Vote Needs To Change

The highly controversial Mob Vote happens annually at Minecraft Live. The vote is between three potential mobs that could be added to the game. However, only one will be added based on how many votes the community submits. These votes have fueled many controversies- the most notable being 2020's Glow Squid-Moobloom-Iceologer matchup. From internet celebrities influencing their followers to vote for a specific one to annoying mobs being voted into the game, it is safe to say people are not fans of this system. Many gamers call for Mojang to add all three options to the game instead, but Mojang stands firm on their decision.

    Mojang Hints At Minecraft 1.22

On July 4, 2024, an article titled "Building Blocks: Stronghold" was published on Minecraft's official website. The conclusion paragraph of this article sparked discussions within the community due to its nostalgic tone. Along with the appearance of the Ender Dragon in many of Minecraft's recent animations and the April Fool's potato dimension, this hints at one of Minecraft's oldest dimensions receiving some TLC. 'Minecraft 1.22', which would potentially overhaul the End dimension much like 2016's 'The Nether Update', is the most anticipated modern update within the community. Fans and content creators worldwide have wished for this update for years, and it may be coming sooner than we think.

The largest hint that 'Minecraft 1.22' will be an End-themed update is Minecraft's recent collaboration with MCC, a.k.a. the Minecraft Championship. This is an event where players- mostly consisting of Minecraft content creators- play through a series of competitive minigames. This collaboration raised eyebrows due to its theme: The Ender Cup. After the eighth minigame in the championship, players flew through in-game replicas of the past Minecraft updates. During this flight after the most recent 'Tricky Trials' update, replicas of overhauled End islands were revealed. With fans more hyped than ever, all we can do is hope Mojang will deliver on their promises and not overestimate their capabilities as they have time and time again.
