Aman Sehrawat Loses Semifinal to Japan’s Higuchi

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat was in for a tough semifinal during the Paris Olympics on August 8, 2024. Following an ideal draw for him in the 57 kg freestyle wrestling event pitted against Aman was Japan’s top-seed Rei Higuchi. The game was tough, and, despite an otherwise impressive show by Aman until then, he lost to Higuchi.

Throughout, Rei Higuchi of Japan was a silver medalist in the 2016 Rio Olympics, unrivaled by any display of technical superiority. There was a difference that everybody could see right from the word go. He rushed to a 4-0 lead with an attack on Aman’s legs. The Japanese grappler continued to dictate the terms of the contest by pinning down the opponent with clinical throws to win in a landslide.

Aman’s Unstoppable Performance

Aman, who had raised hopes of securing a place in the final following two big victories against celebrated opponents in the earlier rounds, came on the heels of good form for Aman in the earlier rounds, where he notched two major victories. In those rounds, he thrashed former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania 12-0. That was quite a big win, highlighting both the technical superiority and strength of Aman.

The bout against Abakarov was a showcase for Aman’s wrestling. He began finely, extracting a point for Abakarov’s passivity and then earning more with a left-leg latch. In the second, there was no stopping Aman. His alacrity and finesse were there for all to see as he effected a couple of throws and a leg lace, which led to an emphatic 12-0 win.

From Gold to Bronze

Aman Sehrawat’s journey to the Paris Olympics was remarkable. With him being the Asian Championship gold medalist and the only male wrestler from India to have made it to the Olympic cut, much was expected of him.

He put in a strong performance during the preliminary rounds, setting high expectations of winning a medal. While it was a setback, the semifinal loss still did not dampen Aman’s spirit. Now, he will fight for the bronze medal, and although this defeat was tough, his earlier performances did suggest he had the mettle and brawn to bounce back.
