Conor McGregor Destroys Canelo Alvarez on Twitter

On August 2nd, 2024, Conor McGregor decided to tweet out at Canelo Alvarez, as he believes that Canelo is making the wrong choice by going head-to-head against the UFC on September 14th, 2024. Months after the UFC announced they would be making their debut at the Sphere, Canelo announced that he would be fighting on the same night against 22-0 Edgar Berlanga.

Alvarez will also be fighting in Las Vegas, though he'll be taking his fight to T-Mobile Arena, a venue that is considered the home of fighting. This is mostly due to the UFC.

UFC 306 will be the main event by UFC Bantamweight Champion Sean O'Malley as he looks to defend his title against Merab Dvalishvili. The co-main event will see Mexico's very own Alexa Grasso defend her UFC Women's Flyweight Championship against long-time rival and former champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Conor McGregor Tweets at Canelo Alvarez

Conor McGregor took to Twitter earlier this week to share his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez and claimed that he won't outdraw UFC 306 and that he doesn't sell fights. He also stated that Turki Alalshikh is taking boxing in the right direction and that Canelo made the wrong decision by continuing to promote fights without his help.

'Canelo is a cornflake. He has about 300k buys in him. He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid. UFC NOCHE is going to run them from the strip. Sheik Turki was right moving on. CANELO DOESN'T SELL.' - Conor McGregor Via X (Twitter)

Canelo Alvarez has had a history of lower-than-expected PPV buys in the past, but at this point in his career, he is well past the number that McGregor claims. However, it also seems clear that Conor was exaggerating his point and that the main purpose of his tweet is that he believes UFC Noche will outsell Canelo vs Berlanga, and he may just be right.

UFC 306 vs Canelo Berlanga - Which Will Sell More?

With UFC 306 taking place on the same night as the Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga fight, it's important to consider whether McGregor's comments were right and to look at which of these two fight cards will end up selling more PPVs. This is not an easy comparison, as the UFC no longer discloses their PPV buys.

However, after UFC 292: Sterling vs O'Malley, Henry Cejudo made public on his YouTube channel how many sales the fight did. He revealed that "Sean O’Malley did anywhere between 300,000 to 350,000. That’s it. That’s all Sean O’Malley made in pay-per-view buys."

This gives an idea as to how much O'Malley normally sells, but the circumstances are somewhat different at UFC 306. It is the first time the UFC is coming to the Sphere and is taking place on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day, which is why the card is also being branded as UFC Noche.

The second reason won't make much of a difference, though, as Canelo Alvarez is from Mexico, which is why he wants to fight that same night as well. Canelo's PPV numbers are higher than what O'Malley did at UFC 292, and they will increase heavily this September, considering the importance of the week.

Ultimately, it likely won't matter anyway, considering that both the UFC and Canelo will have extremely successful nights. This has, however, led to the question of whether Conor McGregor is worthy of calling out Canelo and his PPV buys and who sells more between the two legends.

Who Has Higher PPV Numbers, Canelo or Conor?

According to Boxing Businessman Rick Glaser, Canelo Alvarez's latest fight against Jaime Munguia drew somewhere from 500,000 to 550,000 PPV buys. This is around 300,000 buys less than Conor McGregor's lowest-selling main event PPV fight of all time, which came at UFC 189 against Chad Mendes and drew 825,000 buys. That was Conor's only main event PPV fight that sold less than 1 million.

Canelo's biggest PPV sales came from his fight against Floyd Mayweather, which had over 2.2 million buys. However, that's still lower than UFC 229, which had 2.4 million buys and was McGregor's most-bought UFC fight in which he faced Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Still, that wasn't Conor's highest-selling fight overall, as when he stepped into the ring against Mayweather, the two sold over 4 million PPVs and became the 2nd highest-selling fight of all time, right behind Mayweather vs Pacquiao.
