Baldur's Gate 3 Has Interesting Player Stats

The popularity of the 2023 Game of the Year, Balder’s Gate III, is still running full steam ahead in mainstream gaming spaces. A massive industry success at launch, and one of the most highly anticipated games of its year, BG3 left no room for doubt that bigger games built on exemplary fundamentals can and will leave a lasting impression on the industry and its players.

On the first anniversary of the game’s release, Larian Studios blessed fans with multiple infographics detailing new statistics of the game’s numbers and narrative insights. Including, but not limited to, hours of playtime, in-game choices, hours spent in character creator, preferred romances, and so much more. Surprising some players, and simply reaffirming other players’ love for many aspects of the game once again.

Romance

Shadowheart was the most popular romance with 48.8% of players completing her romance. Over 75M kisses were shared with companions, with Shadowheart at 27M and Astarion at 15M, taking the top spots. Nightly activities involving Halsin were experienced by 650,000 players and the Emperor was joined by 1.1 million players.

Playtime

Players who completed the game reached 1.3 million. 93% of players created custom characters, with 15% of those characters being the Dark Urge origin. Combined playtime in character creation reached the equivalent of 8,196 years. And total playtime across all players hit a massive 452,556,984 hours or 51,662 years.

Characters, Class, and Race

For the top three Origin characters, played as main characters, Astarion took the top spot at 1.21M, followed by Gale at 1.20M, and Shadowheart at 86M. The top three most played classes were Paladin, Sorcerer, and Fighter, with Cleric ending the list in last place. All while Tempest Domain Cleric clenched a third-place spot for the top three subclasses, tertiary only to Berserker Barbarian and the College of Lore Bard. The top three races were Elf in first place, Human coming in second, and Half-elf rounding out the list.

Honor Mode

Difficulty is the name of the game when it comes to Honor Mode, and there is no more concrete proof than the statistics Larian Studios released. Since the release of Honor Mode, 1,223,305 players have attempted and failed to complete the game. While only 141, 660 players managed to conquer it. Of the players who made the attempt and failed, 76% honorably deleted their saves after their total party wipes and began again. While 24% continued their saves in Custom Mode.

End Game

Of the millions upon millions of players that ventured into the world of Balder’s Gate III, 1.8 million players chose to betray the Emperor in the end. Convincing Prince Orpheus to live on as a Mind Flayer was chosen by 329,000 players. The Netherbrain was defeated by the machinations of 3.3M players, with over 200,000 of them choosing its annihilation by allowing Gale to detonate himself to secure the victory.

Overall, these statistics reveal an interesting variety of player choices and fascinations. It speaks to the enduring adoration for the franchise and the continued interest in venturing into the world of Faerûn time and time again. Just to see what happens next time.
