This week, Joe Milton III came out hot in his rookie debut for the New England Patriots. Sharpshooter Milton III has a lot to do in his career; he has something to prove. Standing 6 feet 5 inches, Milton III started his career in Orange County, Florida. Near Orlando, he attended Olympia High School and decided to make his winters cold when agreeing to play for the prestigious University of Michigan. He was welcomed as a backup to Shea Patterson but mostly rode the bench due to talent and COVID-19.

We watched Milton III go from the Michigan Wolverines to the Tennessee Volunteers in 2021. He was patient and finally found himself in a position as the team’s starting quarterback. Finishing his Vols career 11-5 over fifteen starts, he became the New England Patriots’ No. 193 overall pick in the sixth round of the NFL 2024 Draft.

The New Era of the Patriots

The New England Patriots are changing up quite a bit this year, with new franchise quarterback Drake Maye as their first pick of the 2024 Draft. New head coach Jerod Mayo has had some time to observe what makes a successful team, having played for the Patriots previously as a linebacker and coaching under Bill Belichick. Although Milton III is looking strong in preseason games, it is most likely that this star-in-the-making will have to glean from his past experiences and patiently wait on the sidelines.

It is a rebuilding year for the Patriots, and it is also a year where the new talent gains experience. Milton III showed he is proving himself as a newly signed NFL quarterback.

Thursday, in his preseason debut, he was amazing to watch. Zigging and zagging on the field as if he had no pressure or stress on his mind. To see him play, you can contest that while he was running the offense, he was exactly where he was born to be. In control of the team, leading the pack and able to scramble through the interworkings of the defense. He was gliding through the pocket and was able to generate an energy that would question the future of Maye.

Maye was on the sidelines watching defenders be fooled by Milton III’s intense and well-mastered fundamentals. Milton III has this undeniable spark that has yet to be let out and developed. You can feel it when you watch him, the team can feel it, and most importantly, Jerod Mayo isn’t going to pass up the chance to facilitate the magic happening in all three of these men’s first seasons in their new roles.

The Magic of the Sixth Round

Some players just aren’t cut out for the big leagues. Others peak in college and underperform despite being drafted early. We could mention Kenny Pickett, who went in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and now will hope for an opportunity at the Eagles to get off the bench.

Who has been the most influential player to ever come out of the sixth round? Tom Brady was able to start because Drew Bledsoe was injured in the 2001 season. The rest is history.

Joe Milton III: Dark Horse Star?

No one says that Joe Milton III will be the next Tom Brady. Let’s be clear on the concept that magic happens when you have a heart, and you are exactly where you belong. Milton III is exactly where he belongs, and the kid has a heart. We will be seeing more from him. We will be watching him lead a team as the starting quarterback of an NFL team.

Joe Milton III has a story to tell, and it has only begun. Keep your eyes peeled and ears to the ground because he has years of bottled-up talent, and maybe, just maybe, Mayo is the key to accessing it. Could this be the beginning of a new dynasty team in New England?
