Plant-based diets aren’t a fad or a one-time thing that you do to shed pounds — they are a lifestyle that will have you feeling and looking healthier than ever before. Eating wholesome and nutritious food isn’t just to lose weight, tone up, or pack on some muscle. This type of intuitive and healthy eating is best for overall wellness, including physical, mental, and emotional well being.

    What is a Plant-Based Diet?

A plant-based diet focuses on two things — eating whole foods and eating plant-based foods. Whole foods are naturally-found foods that are not processed or contain any type of additives, including preservatives or sugars. These foods are unrefined or contain very minimal refined ingredients.

Plant-based diets focus on foods that come directly from its source and are free of animal ingredients, including items like fruits, vegetables, root vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Other popular plant-based foods that pack a punch are plant-based milks, breads, tempeh, avocados, tofu, and nuts.

    Benefits of Plant-Based Diets

So, what are the perks of switching to a plant-based diet? In short, you can recharge your body, refuel your energy stores, and start functioning at an optimal level. Refined foods with processed ingredients, high levels of sugar, and animal products can all make people have low energy levels, poor digestive systems, and a myriad of health issues.

With plant-based diets, individuals can achieve the following benefits:

    • Weight management — Plant-based diets focus on whole ingredients, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Non-processed foods and high-fiber foods make it easy to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid gaining weight. Since the majority of these foods are low in calories, but high in density, you can eat a higher volume of food, while still consuming fewer calories than you are expanding.
    • Prevent disease — Whole foods can help prevent long-term diseases, boost your immune system if you feel that you are getting sick, or potentially even reverse chronic illness or reduce the symptoms in diseases like cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Studies have shown that diets focusing on minimally processed foods, and plant-based foods, have a much lower risk of heart disease. In addition, the BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care organization found that plant-based diets are much more beneficial to individuals living with Type 2 Diabetes in terms of physical health and emotional stability.
    • Environmental reasons — Not only will you look and feel better, but you will feel good that you’re doing something for someone else. Plant-based diets are better for the planet, as they reduce the inefficiency in waste that occurs while harvesting and raising animals for food.
    • Lower cost — Going plant-based cuts grocery bills by hundreds of dollars every single year. You can save as much as $750 per person by switching from processed chips, ice cream, and sugary cereals to wholesome foods.
