Gold Medallist Arshad Nadeem’s Grand Welcome In Pakistan

Heroes deserve a heroic welcome, as Javelin Champion Arshad Nadeem received on his return to his birthplace, Pakistan. While Arshad Nadeem didn’t have access to all of the resources he needed during his Olympic preparation in Paris. But still, Pakistan did not hesitate to recognize his outstanding achievement at the Games. Upon his return to Lahore, the gold medallist received a warm welcome. Thousands of supporters greeted him with loud cries when he arrived at the Lahore airport on Sunday to a salute from water cannons.

Arshad Nadeen met his relatives with tears in his eyes. Among them was his father, who adorned his neck with a garland while thousands of people sang, “Long Live Arshad Nadeem! “Long live Pakistan!” After that, Arshad Nadeem boarded an open bus to go to the capital city’s triumph parade. Reports say that about 150 police officers and personnel ensured his safety both upon his arrival and during the march.

Arshad Nadeem Wins Gold For PAK After 40 Years

In the men’s javelin throw, while Neeraj Chopra—who had taken home the gold in the Tokyo Olympics three years prior—was the clear favorite, Nadeem wasn’t the clear favorite. Arshad Nadeem, however, had a quiet night due to injury worries, and on his second try, he threw an incredible 92.97 meters to secure the coveted gold medal.

In addition to breaking Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway’s record of 90.57 meters set during the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the throw, Nadeem also made Olympic history as Pakistan’s first individual gold medallist when he finished first in Paris. It was also the country’s first Olympic medal since Barcelona in 1992. The fact that Arshad Nadeem was born and reared in a mud-brick home in a destitute area of rural Punjab makes his victory all the more remarkable to Pakistan.

When he was younger, he practiced throwing makeshift javelins in wheat fields. Previously, in response to his exceptional accomplishment, many provincial governments and organizations announced financial incentives. Later, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian award, was to be given to Nadeem in recognition of his big achievement, according to President Asif Ali Zardari.

Nadeem’s Gratitude

“I give thanks to the Almighty God.” Arshad Nadeem said to the gathering, “I thank my parents and the people of Pakistan. There is a lot of hard work by me and my coach Salman Butt behind this. I saw the love of my people in my town when I returned to my nation. I am grateful to everyone who has shown me their unwavering affection,” he said in a chat with WION’s Anas Mallick, “I am also grateful for such a welcome.”

Neeraj Chopra, the Indian athlete who won the silver medal in Paris, was also commended by Arshad’s mother, who said, “Neeraj Chopra is my son’s friend—Neeraj Chopra is like my son. It is all luck whether a player wins or loses.” Neeraj’s mother had previously referred to Arshad as her son following the Pakistani athlete’s gold medal at the Paris Games.

Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, has ordered the Minar-e-Pakistan and Nadeem’s picture to appear on a commemorative stamp called “Azm-e-Istehkam” (Commitment to Stability). On August 14, which is also Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day, the stamp will be released. In addition to raising Arshad Nadeem’s status as a national hero, his historic victory has inspired a new generation of Pakistani athletes.
