Cyberpunk 2077 Redeemed Itself After Messy Launch

Cyberpunk 2077 was an ambitious project by CD Projekt Red. CD Projekt Red is the biggest and very much a marketing-driven company in Poland. It was coming with a sci-fi world genre with a first-person shooter. Cyberpunk 2077 made CD Project Red invest a lot in new technology including a search engine, graphics system, physics system, and figuring out the shaders. It was an uneasy way and made things go slowly.

CD Projekt Red has done a phenomenal job with The Witcher 3 and won already a Game of the Year in 2015 with estimated selling 28 million copies in 2019. After they nailed that, Cyberpunk 2077 was next released. It came in April of 2020 but the company ended up delaying the game three different times. It started from an April release to September then continued to November and again to December. It was tough to make this game in one specific way. So many issues were addressed before it launched.

Behind Cyberpunk 2077 released with a rocky start 4 years ago found many bugs or heaps of glitches after 45- a minute demo which made users blown away by Keanu Reeves surprised all the players when he appeared in the game, full of action, narrative beats and incredibly impressive. It did not just end there, it continued to be speculation, they were under pressure from investors to get the game out before Christmas by asking its employees to work nights and weekends or even months during the process.

Redemption Arc of Cyberpunk 2077

It is not uncommon to spend upwards of twelve months on one level of a game developed over three years, the game itself also seemed suspended animation. The community was ready to move on from the game until Cyberpunk 2077 launched a 2.0 update that coincided with the Phantom Liberty LCD on Summer Game Fest 2023. CD Projekt Red executed abroad and a significant overhaul of the entire game with enhanced gameplay.

Many were extremely excited to play Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty alongside the original game. Director Pavel Pasco said, "There is no system that we have left untreated. It has proven that it is not required to dramatically overhaul the game to go through the entire kind of release pipeline of printing new disks as known an expensive part to do." Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty came with various new items, new weapons, vehicles, clothing, a large area of Night City, and Dogtown as a new area.

Game Award 2023

After three years of suspended animation, finally, Cyberpunk 2077 won the award for Best Ongoing of the Year show. With the 2.0 update, Cyberpunk 2077 received a performance uplift that blew everything out of the water with an in-depth story that starred Idris Elba. Cyberpunk 2077 was breathtaking both visually and in terms of gameplay.

CD Projekt Red once again successfully managed to restore its reputation. Cyberpunk 2077 has successfully passed the critical period. They never gave up after coming a long way since the first release which ended up with a messy launch, the game has been improved and fixed after the awful experience players had with last-gen consoles.

Overwhelmingly Positive Review on Steam

As spotted on Steam, Cyberpunk 2077 was met with highly positive reviews. Global Community Director Marcin Momot posted a status on CD Projekt Red's Twitter (now X) on May 10^th, 2024, and Pawel Sasko, Cyberpunk 2077’s Guest Lead Designer, thanked players for their support. Cyberpunk 2077 got 6868 user reviews and also 338 user reviews of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty in the last 30 days are “overwhelmingly positive” reviews.

Cyberpunk 2077 became one of gaming's greatest comeback stories and aged so well. As Shigeru Miyamoto once said, "A delayed game is eventually good a bad game but a rushed game is bad forever. " It's apparent at the release of Cyberpunk 2077, gamers tolerated the game's delays influencing the CD Projekt Red to take their time. They showed their patience again for the last four years while the developers went through hundreds of updates and patches.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Future Direction

After surviving the drama surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red paused development on other RPG projects related to business case matters and instead concentrated on The Witcher 4. Cyberpunk 2077 will return in a sequel game that is currently going by the code name Project Orion. Smaller patches may launch in the future without releasing major content updates for the game.
