Avatar: The Last Airbender Returns As Adults

After a creative controversy surrounding Netflix's live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the creators decided to expand Aang’s world and explore new stories. All while staying true to the essence of the original show. Now, Paramount will produce a new animated film featuring the original characters, who will be much older than we remember.

    What Was Announced

It was on August 12, 2020, when Bryan Konietzo, one of the creators of the original series (alongside Michael DiMartino) shared on Instagram, with deep regret, that they would no longer be involved in the Netflix live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. DiMartino cited a lack of support and respect for their vision. It was a mutual decision by the creators due to their respect for what’s crucial to them for the show and the spirit of the series.

The disappointment in the fans didn’t last to show out. But when the world needed it more, the Avatar returned: In 2021, Nickelodeon announced “Avatar Studios”, and the production of a large franchise filled with incoming projects. One of them is the story of grown-up characters of the original series, with strong production participation of both Konietzo and DiMartino!

    Avatar: The Last Airbender

An awarded and well-acclaimed show from 2005 to 2008, The Last Airbender followed Aang, a young Airbender. The world thought Aang disappeared in a moment when people lost their battles under the Fire Nation, a powerful regimen in search of the power of the avatar and the control of nations. Given the impactful nature of the original story, which featured powerful character development, Asian-inspired themes, and reflective subplots, what can we expect from the upcoming animated film?

    Another Point of View

With adult animated series gaining popularity on streaming platforms, such as Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix, the Paramount and Nickelodeon film will focus on a more mature 'Gaang'; named after the main character, Aang. The team includes Katara, Toph, Sokka, and, the latest member, Zuko. Avatar: The Last Airbender was always driven by its characters, with the revolution of the Water, Earth, Fire, and Air nations depending on them and their journey of discovery.

The original series featured well-developed arcs where differences among characters created a space for mutual aid and growth. Transformative aspects of them were influenced by their backgrounds and experiences, such as Aang’s burden of responsibility and Zuko’s evolving values.

    Suposicions

Even if details of the upcoming film remain wrapped, a more mature take on these characters could explore the familiar aspects of their relationships and how they affect them. It's a show impacted by the subjects of loss, learning, and love. This is done through scenarios filled with nature, celebrations, and action through the exploration of appreciative moments, people, and spirits. The new film can recall the things in the story that make it what it is.

Fans have speculated about various storylines. This includes potential connections to the comics or the origins of the city depicted in The Legend of Korra, which shows glimpses of the original Gaang in more adult forms and facing more complex challenges.

    Casting

It has been stated that the original voice actors will not reprise their roles for the adult versions of the characters. However, the creators have expressed confidence that the new casting choices will effectively convey the characters' essence without detracting from the appreciation of what Avatar represents.

The popular K-pop singer Eric Nam will interpret Aang, Dave Bautista will be the voice of the villain, Jessica Matten will voice Katara, Roman Zaragoza will be Sukko and Dione Quann as Toph. Who would be the voice of Zuko, it's yet a mystery.

    Release and More

The film of the Avatar would be in theaters and on the streaming platform of Paramount, who's behind the scenes in making this possible. At CinemaCon 2024, which was attended by just a small bunch of journalists, the release date was delayed from 2024 to October 2025. Fans are excited by the possibility of a well-written and the back of nostalgia show that gained the hearts of all.
