Boston Red Sox: Promote Top 3 Prospects To Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox currently have a 61-55 record so far in the 2024 MLB season. Boston is currently in third place in the American League East behind the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees. If the season ended today, the Boston Red Sox would not be in the playoffs. They trail the Kansas City Royals (65-53) by two games for the last wild card spot in the American League Standings. What moves did Boston recently make within the organization?

Promote Top 3 Prospects To Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox did something very rare over the weekend. They promoted their top three prospects from Double-A to Triple-A. Shortstop Marcelo Mayer, outfielder Roman Anthony, and catcher Kyle Teel were all called up from the Portland Sea Dogs to the Worcester Red Sox. All three of those players will make their debut in Triple-A on Tuesday against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies). All three of those players made an impact in Double-A this season and they hope to make an impact in Triple-A before the end of the 2024 season. We will see if all three of them will still be in the minors by the start of the 2025 season.

Mayer is the number one prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization. He is only 21 years old and was the fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Marcelo Mayer is projected to reach the majors in 2024, but it is more possible that the Boston Red Sox wait until 2025 to call him up. Mayer this year with the Portland Sea Dogs had a .307 batting average with eight home runs and 38 RBIs, along with 13 stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .370.

Outfielder Roman Anthony was the 79 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Anthony only played in Double-A this year until he was called up to Triple-A. Roman Anthony had a .269 batting average with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs, along with 16 stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .367. Anthony is projected to reach the majors in 2025.

Catcher Kyle Teel is predicted to be with the Boston Red Sox at some point during the 2025 season. With the Portland Sea Dogs in Double-A this year, he had a .298 batting average with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs, along with nine stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .390. Teel was selected with the 14 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. It is a good sign to see that Boston’s top draft picks over the last couple of seasons are developing rapidly over the past couple of seasons in the minor leagues. The Red Sox may be a contender again soon. They may not be in the playoffs this season, but these prospects could help them contend in 2025 and beyond.
