Yordan Alvarez Finds Big Swing for Houston Astros

Yordan Alvarez has shown time and time again that he’s one of baseball’s most fearsome hitters for the Houston Astros. Alvarez’s timely home runs, among many highlights, have won American League playoff games. They also have led to winning the World Series in 2022 with a memorable center-field shot off Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado.
This season, though, has been a struggle at times for him. Alvarez was acquired in a 2016 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers for reliever Josh Fields. Houston Astros fans always love to tweak Dodgers fans’ noses over this “steal” of a deal.
In 112 games this season, Alvarez is hitting .307 with 128 hits and 63 RBIs in 417 at-bats. He’s totaled 25 home runs so far, including three at Fenway Park as the Houston Astros swept a three-game series with Boston. The Cuban-born outfielder and designated hitter has made the Red Sox’s home stadium one of his favorite ballparks, too.
Alvarez had six hits, including his homers, scored five runs, and had four RBIs over the weekend. That boosted his Fenway Park average to .482 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. If you don’t think his play isn’t noticed by teammates, then think again. Third baseman Alex Bregman, who had a pretty good series himself, talked up Alvarez after Sunday’s 10-2 victory.
“Just to be able to be his teammate and be able to watch what he does on a day-to-day basis is special,” Bregman said, according to The Associated Press. “He hits for average line-to-line, hits the ball out of the ballpark anywhere, so he’s always fun to watch and he’s very clutch, too. … He always gets his ‘A’ swing off.”
All Boston manager Alex Cora could do postgame on Saturday was tip his cap to Alvarez. Cora also compared Alvarez’s hitting prowess to Hall of Famer and Boston legend David Ortiz. He also tossed in New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge into the conversation.
“For me, he’s up there with Judge, to be honest with you,” Cora said. “Closest thing to David, probably, in the game. Very, very, very similar to David Ortiz.”
In looking at his gaudy numbers while playing in Boston, Alvarez took note of his results. “You can kind of tell just by the game, the results,” Alvarez said through a team translator.
The Astros’ batting order has been putting Alvarez in the No. 3 spot behind leadoff hitter Jose Altuve and Bregman. When he’s been healthy, outfielder Kyle Tucker has been batting cleanup. Tucker, though, remains on the sidelines with a nasty shin contusion injury. His return is still up in the air. Espada, though, is keeping tabs with Tucker’s progress and hopes to get him back soon.
Still, the Astros’ offense clicks best when Alvarez is hitting on all cylinders. Watching him come alive in Boston gives fans hopes that he’ll keep mashing homers and extra-base hits now and into September.
The Astros open up a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Framber Valdez gets the start for Houston, who hopes Valdez has his curveball and sinker working well.
