Graham Thorpe’s Wife Shares Thoughts About Her Late Husband

The wife of former England cricketer Graham Thorpe has disclosed that he committed suicide after an exhaustive struggle with depression and anxiety. August 5 was the 55-year-old’s death date. His cause of death was unclear at the time, but his wife Amanda and daughter Kitty said on Monday that he “took his own life” after “suffering from major depression and anxiety”.

Thorpe’s death news was announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board. But even with his family’s and doctors’ assistance, he was unable to win the war against his mental health. Last Saturday, before the Farnham Cricket Club and the Chipstead Cricket Club played a match, there was a memorial service for Graham Thorpe. His wife, Kitty (22), and their daughter, Emma (19), were present.

Graham Thorpe’s Career

Making his Test debut against Australia in 1993, Graham Thorpe became the first English player to score a century in twenty years. Thus started his international career. Later, he participated in 100 Test matches and amassed 6,744 runs at an average of 44.7. Against New Zealand in 2002, he scored his greatest total of 200 runs without conceding an error. At an average of 37.2, Thorpe scored 2,380 runs in 82 One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1993 and 2002.

Graham Thorpe’s ability to adjust to various situations and opponents was a defining characteristic of his playing career. It was his elegant and durable left-handed batting approach that won him the respect of both opponents and teammates.

His Test career was crowned with many memorable moments, such as his century on debut, his match-winning performance in Christchurch in 2002, and his valiant 64 not out in Karachi, which ended England’s 39-year losing streak in the Pakistan series.

Between 1993 and 2005, he had an outstanding career for England as an exquisite batsman. He then spent 12 years in a variety of coaching capacities. Remarkably, Graham Thorpe was named head coach of the Afghanistan men’s cricket team in March 2022, but he was unable to take up the position because of health problems.

Amanda Thorpe detailed Graham Thorpe’s struggles in an interview with Michael Atherton, the former captain of England. He couldn’t get over his obstacles even with his wife and two daughters as supporting family members. She went on, saying, “We are heartbroken that he followed through on his belief that we would be better off without him because he had been feeling so sick recently. Graham Thorpe persisted in his suffering despite several therapies.

“Despite moments of hope and the old Graham,” Amanda Thorpe claims, “he continued to experience severe bouts of anxiety and depression.” He attempted a great deal of treatments, but sadly, none of them really seemed to work. We supported him as a family.”

The Thorpes are thinking of naming a foundation after Graham. His daughter Kitty explained how much her father had changed, adding, “He had loved life, and he loved us, but he just didn’t see a way out.” Seeing how reclusive he had become was devastating.

“It was strange to see this person trapped in the body of Dad,” Kitty said, reflecting on how her father was remembered. “I’m happy that’s how he is appropriately remembered by everyone as the whole person he was,” she concluded.
