Why Kylian Mbappe Might Struggle at Real Madrid

Real Madrid has been a part of one of the longest, most anticipated transfer sagas ever, finally concluded. We’re going to see Kylian Mbappe finally wear Real Madrid’s royal galactic white shirt this season. One of the best players in the world for quite some time now, making his mark on football at just the age of 16 with AS Monaco, went on to win the World Cup in 2018, pivotal for France just at the age of 18.

Now onto the biggest club in the world, Real Madrid, where the expectations on Kylian’s shoulders would be tremendous. Everyone would look forward to Mbappe delivering with the royal whites. With his brilliant stats and his status as a world-class player, surely he can deliver Real Madrid, too, or maybe not?

What do Madrid Fans Expect from Mbappe?

Real Madrid have their hands on one of the best forwards in the world. Coming off as Paris Saint Germain’s top scorer of all time at just 25 is mind-boggling, considering the player has not even hit his prime years yet. With 220 goals and 98 assists in just 265 appearances in all competitions since joining the club in 2017, these impressive numbers highlight his outstanding impact at PSG as a goal-scorer and playmaker. Despite the club not hitting heights in the UEFA Champions League, individually, Mbappe has 41 goals and 26 assists in 62 games in Europe, proving he can nail the biggest stage in club football.

Real Madrid fans would expect huge amounts of goals and assists from Kylian. Expecting him to fill the shoes of Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, etc, who once ruled the Santiago Bernabeu. The Los Blancos fans would also expect Mbappe to form a formidable partnership with the potential Ballon d’Or winner Vinicious Jr and Rodrygo Silva upfront. This can dominate world football like the BBC ( Bale, Benzema, Cristiano) once did at Real Madrid and helped the club win an unprecedented UEFA Champions League three-peat. Real Madrid signing Kylian Mbappe for a free transfer seems like a fairytale to Real Madrid fans, and everything would turn out perfectly. However, things could turn out very differently.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Demands and Ego Issues

Kylian Mbappe had the world in the palm of his hands in Paris, everything he said or wished to happen, be it an increase in wages, or being the captain of the club, would happen in a matter of seconds. Nasser Al Khelaifi, the PSG owner, even gave Mbappe a mind-blowing contract back in 2022 that would see him get paid 250 euros in three years and give him a say on how the club is run. All this is just to make him stay at PSG. His ego boosted to the sky. PSG pampered him for two years, and everything around him was made. This certainly won’t be the case in Real Madrid, though.

Ancelloti demands very highly of his players. Even when the squad is already stacked with stars and world-class players, he demands equal amounts of hard work from everyone. This means everyone has to attack and defend at the same time, Mbappe who is certainly not known for his defensive duties might struggle with tracking back. His ego might come in the way and say, “Why should I track back and defend when my job is to score and create goals?”. This can hinder Real Madrid’s style of play and their strive for trophies, even with just one player.

Position Dilemma for Real Madrid

Real Madrid might have a small but big problem here. Since Mbappe can opt anywhere in the front three, his preferred position is still at the left wing, where he has excelled the most, but that position is already occupied by arguably the best player in the world at the moment, the Real Madrid player of the year Vinicius Jr. He has given exceptional performances that have helped Real Madrid clinch two La Liga titles and 2 UEFA Champions League titles in 4 years. If Mbappe is to be deployed on the left, which is highly unlikely, Vinicius might have to shift wings, disrupting and changing Real Madrid’s already successful system.

The same case could be said about Mbappe, where he would not play in the position where he is more effective, using his devastating pace and skills. Ultimately limiting his effectiveness and could struggle. This overlap could lead to a struggle for Mbappe and the Real Madrid manager. Mbappe would need time to get used to his new role, which might be upfront as a number nine. At a team whose supporters are notoriously impatient and where instant success is expected. A player with Mbappe’s skill and mindset can nonetheless find it very hard to the club’s prestige. He also has personal goals, given that he lacks a Champions League medal.
