Alex Bregman Locked In For Houston Astros

Maybe the Houston Astros were looking for a cure to the summertime blues and Alex Bregman decided to step up and take over. Well, Bregman, an LSU product, has been leading the way in recent games.

Bregman has been working with Astros hitting coach Alex Cintron on fine-tuning his hitting stroke. Earlier this season, he had a habit of swinging up, kind of like taking hacks, at pitches. The results were not good and saw him flounder at the plate.

    Houston Astros Welcome Bregman’s Offense

Well, he’s not floundering these days. Bregman, whom Astros broadcaster Steve Sparks has deemed “Big Shot Bregman,” is hitting on all cylinders. He homered for the fourth straight game on Tuesday night, leading the Houston Astros over the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2.

He’s also riding an eight-game hitting streak, totaling 16 hits during that time. Bregman has a c0uple of three-hit games, including Tuesday night, in there as well. For the season, Bregman is hitting .263 with 19 homers and 59 RBIs. He has 122 hits in 463 at-bats. Bregman also has walked 36 times, helping to set the table for Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez.

“I feel like I’m swinging it as good as I ever have in my career,” Bregman, 30, told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com on Tuesday night. “I feel like I learned a lot over the last few years, and I feel like I’m just trusting the work we’re putting in pregame. I feel really good.”

Astros fans know that if Bregman gets hot, then it affects his teammates. It’s along the same lines of what happens when Alvarez and/or Jose Altuve find their hitting strokes, too. Altuve has been among American League leaders in batting average this season. Alvarez is back doing “Yordan things” with home runs. He’s even destroying scoreboards, too. Alvarez smacked a batting practice homer that slammed into the right-field scoreboard at Tropicana Field on Tuesday. It totally put it out of commission.

Alex Bregman Keeps It Simple At Plate

While Alvarez keeps on slugging, Bregman is keeping things simple in his approach at the plate.

“It’s been a hell of a last two months,” Bregman said. “We’re playing good. Obviously, I started kind of slow but learned a lot. I feel like I’m still young in my career and learning. I learned a lot about the swing, about what works for me and what doesn’t. I feel good.”

Astros manager Joe Espada is quite pleased to see his third baseman have such massive success in his at-bats. “He’s just found his groove,” Espada said. “His swing is right, and there’s a level of confidence, which he never lacks, but right now he’s putting [on] some good swings.”

Mind you, the Houston Astros are doing all of this offensive damage without outfielder Kyle Tucker. If he can return at some point this season, then Tucker’s presence in the batting order will be most welcome. Bregman and Alvarez, who were named co-AL Players of the Week on Monday, hopefully will keep their hitting attacks on fire.

The Astros finish up a three-game series against the Rays on Wednesday afternoon at The Trop. Ronel Blanco gets the start for Houston. The team also hopes it can get back Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander into the pitching rotation soon. Verlander will be making another rehab start at Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday. It could be his final minor-league assignment before returning to the big-league squad.
