VVS Laxman to Stay Head of NCA in Bengaluru

VVS Laxman will continue as head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for another year. He was appointed to the position at the end of December 2021, and his original period of service was to be three years.

He has so far made great contributions to the NCA following his distinguished cricket career. The fact that his contract is being extended speaks about the amount of work that he has done at the academy. His commitment to developing budding cricketers to fit high standards in the game has been visible all through.

Laxman Chooses NCA Over IPL

One of the most intriguing parts of the extension that Laxman received was the offer that he got from an IPL franchise to join their team. But he has decided to not accept this tempting offer and stay true to his commitment to the NCA, as this spirit to the academy's mission is unwavering.

His tenure has been elongated in line with a new NCA facility in Bengaluru, which will soon be inaugurated. The foundation stone for a new facility in February 2022 was laid by none other than the former president of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly; the Secretary, Jay Shah; and Laxman himself. This state-of-the-art facility will play a very important role in the development of future cricket talent.

Current NCA Campus and its Role

The present NCA at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, Karnataka, became the most important center in the year 2000 to take care of nurturing many young and promising cricketers. It is also a rehabilitation center for injured players and practices, hence pivotal in the development of Indian cricket.

In his position with the NCA, Laxman inherited and has since continued the programs and processes set out by his predecessor, Rahul Dravid. This has ensured that there is a sense of stability and progression within the academy and that the developmental programs remain unchanged in terms of structure and efficiency.

His biggest challenge will be to restore the elites in the erstwhile India A tour program, which, of late, has become a rarity. Regular tours are imperative for young players to gain match practice and experience to qualify them for higher honors.

Laxman's Glorious Playing Career

Laxman's playing career was ornamented with outstanding performances. He played 134 Test matches and scored 8781 runs with 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries. His best score in Test cricket was 281. In the 86 one-day internationals he played, he made 2,338 runs. These innings included six centuries and ten half-centuries. His highest score in any ODI was 131, which makes a statement about his adaptability and skills for different formats.

It is expected that, as Laxman goes on with his work at the NCA, experience and good leadership will only be key players for more success. His focus on developing young talent and faithfulness to the goals of the academy will undoubtedly benefit the academy and the future of Indian cricket.
