Newcastle Not Giving Up on Marc Guehi: Improved Offer Close to £65m

Newcastle ended the 2023/24 season on a disappointing note. Before the season, their 2022/23 campaign saw them finish fourth, qualifying for the Champions League spot. However, last season, they fell into numerous crises, including major injury challenges.

At the end of last season, the Magpies finished 7th below Chelsea, who finished 6th. This position could have guaranteed them a UEFA Conference League spot, but unfortunately, Chelsea took the spot. This was due to Man United stealing the Europa League spot from the Blues after winning the FA Cup. In return, Chelsea had to secure the Conference League.

The Magpies are looking to add to their squad depth this upcoming season to avoid a repetition of last season’s crisis. So far, they’ve been after Crystal Palace star defender Marc Guehi. However, the London side has refused to make things easy for the Magpies.

Newcastle in Pursuit of Guehi

Newcastle has been working to secure the signature of Crystal Palace center-back to bolster their squad. A major part of the crisis the Magpies had last season was due to injuries, which mostly hit their center-backs. This led to a serious unavailability at the defense. Eddie Howe did a lot of improvisation last season. The Englishman had to use some of his natural fullbacks in the center-back position. This led to many struggles in the team and became a major reason behind their retrogression last season.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi this summer to bolster their defense hasn’t been smooth. The Magpies got their first offer rejected by the Crystal Palace. However, they are not giving up, as they’ve received an improved offer. Newcastle seems to be loading up an offer close to £65m for the English defender. However, time will tell on the outcome of the deal.

Guehi’s quality

Guehi was deemed one of the best center-backs in the league last season. His impressive performance last season secured him a big call to the England squad for the Euros. In addition to his lustrous performance in the league, he shone for the Three Lions in the Euros.

Guehi became a regular starter and a key part of the English team’s journey to the finals. He was pivotal to the English team’s compactness at the Euros and was arguably one of their best players.

Guehi’s arrival at Newcastle will undoubtedly massively enhance their defense. With injured players returning, he’ll be part of strong defensive depth.
