University of North Florida Mens Hockey 2024-2025 Season

The University of North Florida men’s hockey team is getting ready for another upcoming hockey season. The Osprey finished 4-9 last season and are hoping to build on experience to be a more successful team. This season, they will play top Division 1 NCAA schools for exposure in NCAA college hockey. The Osprey will play the University of Florida, Florida State, Florida Atlantic, the University of South Florida, and the University of Miami.

Despite UNF being a Division 3 school, UNF needs exposure to the Division 1 schools so that they can be eligible for the Frozen Four Tournament. Once established as a means hockey program, it could be a bright future for UNF sports. Last season, Denver beat Boston College in the NCAA Frozen Four Tournament. UNF can look to the future to be part of this tournament. The Osprey have young, talented athletes who are exciting to watch and who also have bright futures ahead.

The University of Florida Osprey will open the 2024 hockey season against the Florida Gators (UF) on September 20th, 2024. This will be an interstate rival game between the two teams. The Gators and Osprey have split the season series 1-1. The Osprey will be looking for their first win against the Gators in their home opener.

For the Osprey, Forward Jarret Ireland had a remarkable first season, leading the team with 12 Goals, 12 assists, and 24 points in the seven games played. If Ireland can build on what he did last season, the Osprey can find success.

As a true Freshman last season, starting goalie Matt Maroney had a great season. He is a Sophomore this year, hoping to build momentum and experience as a goalie in the NCAA. Matt Maroney saved 84% of his total shots and averaged 5.5 goals a game. This is an impressive stat for a Freshman playing in the NCAA hockey league. He was 1-3 in his starts last season. Maroney has improved his strength, hand-eye coordination, and movement this off-season.

UNF Osprey Hockey Looking Ahead for the 2024-2025 Season

Even though the University of North Florida is a fairly new men’s hockey team and is only coming into its second season as a college team, it has talented young athletes. UNF is considered a Division 3 school, but it is known for its educational programs in sports.

Hopefully, as a D3 school and new hockey team playing top-ranked Florida schools this season, the Osprey will put itself on the map. Hockey has become popular in Florida with the professional teams the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers, who recently won the Stanley Cup, making it entertaining for fans.
