Kyrie Irving’s Media Business Venture Strikes a New Deal

Kyrie Irving is one of the most important — and polarizing — players in the NBA. Once hailed as a Cleveland Cavaliers hero, Irving, 32, became an arguably odd player due to his reported ego, along with his arguable conspiracy theories.

But there’s a positive news story about how Irving’s media business venture, Players TV, recently struck a new deal, which should prove there’s hope for the Dallas Mavericks guard. Here’s what you need to know about Players TV and Irving’s current and former business ventures.

    Kyrie Irving’s Previous Business Ventures

Kyrie Irving has been a polarizing player on and off the court but has turned a corner recently. Irving had a shoe deal with Nike, worth $11 million as of 2019, and his sneakers were the second best-selling sneaker line in 2017. The Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, native announced a shoe deal with Anta Sports, a Chinese sports brand, and joined the company as a Chief Creative Officer for Anta Basketball, both in 2023.

2023 was an arguably good year in business for Irving. He invested in Kicks Crew, a sneaker platform, and joined the platform as a Chief Community Officer. His latest job position with Kicks Crew reportedly focuses on cause-driven projects that unite communities through art and basketball collaborations.

    Kyrie Irving’s Current Business Venture

2024 has been going well business-wise for Kyrie Irving. Irving’s current business venture, a player-owned media network, recently picked up a new partner in DirecTV. On Wednesday, Brandon Robinson of Scoopb.com posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Broadcast News: DirectTV has added Players TV to their viewership package.”

Irving co-owns Players TV alongside Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. It’s refreshing to see NBA players at the negotiation table in the television industry. More often than not, television deals are the talk of the NBA offseason with Amazon, ESPN, and NBC securing new television rights with the NBA.

    His Future with Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving recently spoke about how important it is to create content for what you feel is right. According to Athlon Sports, Irving said, “As we develop more content, we develop more partnerships, I definitely see a bright future for us … Being at Players TV gives me that option to be independent and create content that really feels at home for me.”

Irving, a former first-overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, has also been achieving success on the court. Irving’s NBA career has been reborn in Dallas after tumultuous stints in Brooklyn and Boston. In June 2024, the Dallas Mavericks star said that he was in no hurry to walk away from the sport of men’s basketball. But retirement can occur as soon as 2026 when the Mavericks star’s contract expires, so we’ll see what happens.
