Jorge Martin Breaks Spielberg Lap Record to Secure Pole Position

Like MotoGP, the qualifying session at the Austrian GP was always going to be exciting, and this year was no exception. Jorge Martin put in a lap record-breaking performance at Spielberg to clinch pole position for the race.

The Spanish rider, who has been in tremendous form in the current season, was in a tearing pace with a time of 1m27. 748s during the 15-minute pole shootout and knocked off the much-expected pre-qualifying topper Francesco Bagnaia by a whisker. This stunning lap not only saw him at the top of the timesheets but also made him the first rider on a MotoGP bike to pull a lap time of under 1m28s at the circuit.

Battling Through Injury

But this was made even more striking given that Jorge Martin was coming into the match with a small cut on his left thumb, which he got while showering the night before. Nevertheless, that race was a disappointment. The championship leader displayed no signs that the injury was causing him much trouble. As usual, pressure seemed to drive him, and it was evident during the face-off with his closest title rival, Francesco Bagnaia.

Bagnaia, who scored double victories at Red Bull Ring last year and is a permanent contender for the leadership, was the initiator of the performance. Marquez’s final push produced 1m28. 292s caused Aprilia engine man Aleix Espargaro to be pushed off the front row to the fourth. Espargaro’s team-mate Maverick Vinales also had a good session by locking a sixth starting position for the Noale factory.

After the session, Jack Miller, the top KTM rider, secured the second row after a 1m28. Climbed 546s after nan economic turmoil during Q1. The Australian will start from the fifth position on the grid, with Vinales on one side and Espargaro on the other. Marco Bezzecchi took 9th place on the VR46 team’s start grid, while the KTM wildcard Pol Espargaro, who crashed in a lap, was likely to be in the top five. The remaining grid positions were filled by Alex Marquez of Gresini, who was 11th, Brad Binder of factory KTM, who was 12th, and Miguel Oliveira, who was eliminated from Q1.

Some riders struggled during the session, particularly the Tech3 GasGas duo: the rookie Pedro Acosta didn’t qualify for Q2 for the first time in his MotoGP career and will start from 14th position. Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo set 15th place, just ahead of the second GasGas-dressed RC16 of Augusto Fernandez, while Honda’s improved engine was only able to secure 17th place on the fastest of the RC213Vs.
