Mallorca vs Real Madrid Match Preview

After their recent triumph in the UEFA Super Cup, Real Madrid will kick off their 2024-25 La Liga season with a match against Mallorca at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on Sunday night. As the reigning Spanish champions, Real Madrid finished last season 10 points ahead of second-placed Barcelona.

On the other hand, Mallorca ended the 2023-24 season in 15th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone. This season marks their fourth consecutive year in La Liga, their best run since 2013, although they had a challenging previous campaign.

Mallorca, now under the management of Jagoba Arrasate, who took over after leaving Osasuna, has made three summer signings: Johan Mojica from Villarreal and free transfers Takuma Asano and Mateu Morey.

Real Madrid Being the Favorites to Win

Since October 2019, Mallorca has defeated Real Madrid only once in La Liga, a 1-0 win at home in February 2023. Last season, Real Madrid won both league fixtures 1-0, and they are expected to be strong favorites to secure another victory on Sunday, buoyed by their recent UEFA Super Cup win. Kylian Mbappe scored on his Real Madrid debut in a 2-0 win over Atalanta BC, contributing to their Super Cup success.

Jude Bellingham impressed in a deeper role for Real Madrid, and with new additions like Mbappe and the talented young Endrick, the team is again a top contender in La Liga and the Champions League. Despite a mixed pre-season with losses to AC Milan and Barcelona before a win against Chelsea, Real Madrid showed a strong second-half performance against Atalanta.

Last season, Real Madrid dominated La Liga with 95 points from 38 matches, finishing 10 points ahead of Barcelona and only losing once. They also boasted the league’s best attacking and defensive records. They aim to strongly start the 2024-25 La Liga season with upcoming fixtures against Real Valladolid and Las Palmas following this weekend’s game.

    Team News and Possible Line-ups

Mallorca will be missing Javi Llabres due to a muscle injury, but aside from that, the team is in good shape for their first match of the season. Manager Jagoba Arrasate will likely use a three-man defense this season, with Johan Mojica, who was on loan with him at Osasuna last year, making his debut for Mallorca in this game.

For Real Madrid, Eduardo Camavinga, who injured his knee in training before the UEFA Super Cup, will be out for at least six weeks. Real Madrid did not pick up any new injuries in their game against Atalanta, so Carlo Ancelotti will likely stick with the same starting lineup, featuring Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, and Rodrygo in attack. Eder Militao is back to full fitness after a knee injury and is expected to play alongside Antonio Rudiger in central defense, with Jude Bellingham continuing in a deeper midfield role.

Possible starting lineup for Mallorca: Greif; Van der Hayden, Raillo, Gonzalez; Maffeo, Mascarell, D. Rodriguez, Mojica; Darder; Muriqi, Asano

Possible starting lineup for Real Madrid: Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius
