BCCI has Overcast Stance on Hosting Women's T20 World Cup

Due to political issues, security concerns have been raised for Bangladesh, which is set to host the women’s T20 World Cup in October. In case of an emergency, plans are being considered to have a backup location ready to hold the game. On the other hand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially denied that India will be hosting the competition.

On the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, BCCI secretary Jay Shah stopped by the TOI’s Mumbai headquarters and, in an interview, reaffirmed India’s position. Ten nations, including England and Scotland, will compete in the Women’s T20 World Cup. Dhaka and Sylhet will host 23 of the matches. Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates are being evaluated as possible backup hosts in case the tournament needs to be moved.

BCCI Declines Hosting Women’s T20 World Cup

The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India stated, “They had asked the BCCI if we could host the event, and I had politely declined.” Next year, we will host the ODI Women’s World Cup, and this October, we will still be in the monsoon season. I don’t want to convey the idea that I want to host the World Cup twice in a row.”

BCCI also disclosed that the nation’s Olympic athletes will have access to the brand-new, cutting-edge National Cricket Academy (NCA), which is scheduled to open in September on the outskirts of Bengaluru. “We plan to make it accessible to Olympian athletes such as Neeraj Chopra,” stated Shah. Regarding the inquiry of whether India will stage pink-ball Tests in the upcoming season, Jay Shah dismissed the notion.

“No, there aren’t any provisions. In India, a pink-ball match ends in two days. Both viewers and broadcasters lose money as a result,” BCCI remarked. The final pink-ball Test match between India and Sri Lanka took place in Bengaluru in 2022. India hasn’t played a pink-ball series at home in its last two series against Australia and England.

ICC Monitors Bangladesh Crisis

After 1971, Bangladesh had the worst conditions in its history. More than 400 people have died as a result of the political upheaval in Bangladesh. It was started as a student-led protest against civil service employment quotas. To assess the situation and guarantee the safety of all parties concerned, the ICC is currently collaborating with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and other security professionals. No doubt, the viability of holding the tournament in Bangladesh is at risk due to the present state of affairs in the nation. However, the reason behind the BCCI’s rejection is uncertain.

Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, abruptly quit and flew to India after weeks of violent anti-government demonstrations that claimed many lives. The Women’s T20 World Cup is set to take place in Bangladesh from October 3rd to October 20th. The turmoil has caused the International Cricket Council (ICC) to keep a tight eye on the situation there.

Meanwhile, Jay Shah stated that the BCCI is looking forward to the next home series against Bangladesh. In September, Bangladesh will go to India for a three-match Twenty20 series and two Test matches. September 19 will mark the start of the first Test in Chennai, and September 27 will mark the start of the second Test in Kanpur. On October 6, the T20 series will kick off in Gwalior.
