The time for DLC 2 for Dying Light 2 may be upon us as a new leak revealed what could be the name for DLC 2. X (formerly Twitter) User @Kurakasis made a new post where Techland, the developers of Dying Light 2, has recently filed for a new trademark dubbed" Dying Light: The Beast". The Dying Light community has been in uproar with this news for what this could possibly mean: The return of the Night Hunter? A new enemy never seen before? Here's what we know so far about the Dying Light lore.

    "Good Night and Good Luck"

    The Story of Dying Light

For those unfamiliar, The Dying Light series is an open-world survival horror game. The player plays as a mercenary operative Kyle Crane for a fictional organization called the Global Relief Effort (GRE). Their mission is to infiltrate the city and search for a man named Rais for his research development of a cure for the Harran Virus. The Harran Virus is responsible for the zombie outbreak and mutations across the city but no one knows its origin. Kyle must learn to survive while also being infected himself, form alliances and encounter deadly enemies along the way.

In the DLC, Dying Light: The Following, Crane needs to venture out to the countryside of Harran in search of more Antizin: suppressants for the Harran Virus. He encounters a cult called "The Following" who worships a figure called The Mother, she grants her followers a mysterious blue mist that not only suppresses the virus without the need for Antizin but also makes them invisible to the infected. The Mother's disciples named The Faceless, interact with Crane for various tasks and gain the trust of the cult.

After many events unfold, Crane heads to a place where The Faceless and The Mother reside, with the help of hallucinations, Crane discovers that The Mother has been a sentient and telepathic volatile this whole time. From here, the game can split off into two endings: The Nuke ending has Crane and The Mother activate a nuclear bomb, which seemingly annihilates all of the countryside and the city of Harran.

    The Night Hunter

The Volatile ending has Crane disagreeing with The Mother about destroying everything to which, The Mother forces Crane to drink a vial of the blue mist in liquid form. They fight and Crane emerges victorious, it's bittersweet until Crane experiences changes in his body while trying to return to Harran while hallucinating that The Mother speaks to him. She tells him he made a grave mistake. Crane makes it out of the sewer system to discover he made it out of the quarantine zone, people look at him in fear as he looks down to discover he's a volatile. As the sun sets and the night comes, all we hear is the scream of a volatile.

There is a game mode called "Be The Zombie" where the player can control a new enemy type exclusive to multiplayer called The Night Hunter. In lore, The Night Hunter is a sub-mutation of the volatile that is extremely rare to happen but is possible, This creature has immense strength, speed, and agility. While also possesses many abilities such as tendrils and UV-blocking that make him a dangerous foe.

Many have theorized that Kyle Crane is The Night Hunter, from the clothing and appearance to how agile, strong, and smart The Night Hunter is. The most prominent piece of evidence is the volatile scream heard at the end of the volatile ending of The Following, which sounds exactly like The Night Hunter's howl. So far, there hasn't been any concrete evidence to support this theory but the community is holding out hope, even the developers have teased that they will reveal the canon ending of Dying Light in Dying Light 2.

    "Stay Human"

The Story of Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 takes place 17 years after the events of the first game, the GRE did eventually manage to create a cure and vaccine for the Harran Virus, effectively "eradicating" it, although the fates of Kyle Crane and the city of Harran are largely left unknown. However, the GRE was experimenting with the Harran Virus to turn it into a bio-weapon to sell to whichever military would pay top dollar for it. A strain of the virus escaped from a GRE lab in October 2021, which in turn, caused an outbreak on a global scale and in four years, collapsed civilization and brought humanity to the brink of extinction in the event known as "The Fall".

Individuals who are dubbed Pilgrims travel in the wastelands of the post-apocalyptic earth to deliver messages between a few of the last standing holdouts of human survivors. The player plays as one such Pilgrim named Aiden Caldwell, who was a young boy during The Fall, he was experimented on along with his sister, Mia, in a GRE lab to hopefully find a cure for THV, which ends up failing and ends up separating his sister from Aiden. He became a Pilgrim in search of her, finding a man named Waltz who experimented on him when he was a child.

    How The Pieces Connected

Techland is no stranger to storytelling and setting up plot twists to catch players off guard. This new DLC could mean several things, but here's how it could all potentially become connected. In Dying Light 2, there are many segments throughout the story where due to a combination of becoming infected, the experiments from when he was a kid, and the inhibitor injections, he's been mutating into a different kind of infected, He seems to have superhuman strength, speed, and agility while also retaining intelligence to not become mindless like the other infected, sound familiar? Given this is a possibility only adds validity to the theory of Kyle Crane being The Night Hunter.

Could this mean players will finally see The Night Hunter again? Will the final battle be a battle of the wits, pinning two different beasts together, both fighting for dominance and see who emerges victorious? Only time will tell, one thing's for sure however, DLC 2 is highly anticipated for what it could have in store for us, we must wait and see where the story can take us.

    Departing Thoughts

Dying Light is by far, Techland's finest work yet, there has been so much passion and creativity put into these games. The last zombie games that Techland worked on were Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, so they have a great portfolio to create great games. Techland has been active within the community and actively listens to its player base, which is rare in the gaming industry, but welcome when it does happen.
