Rishabh Pant Under Siege After His Delhi Premier League Debut

Rishabh Pant, the Indian cricket team’s wicketkeeper, struck 35 off 32 balls for Purani Dilli 6 in a Delhi Premier League (DPL) match against South Delhi Superstarz. While the speed of the innings did not match Pant’s usual approach, his troubles against spin received much criticism on social media. Pant’s knock included four fours and one six, although his strike rate was only 109. This is coming off after his decent performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.

But now, Rishabh Pant was unable to play large knocks, which fans pointed out because the expectation was for him to score well at the top of the innings. Just before the match, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla congratulated the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman on his outstanding efforts in India’s ICC T20 World Cup victory.

Pant scored 171 runs in eight innings of competition, averaging 24.42, with a high score of 42. In the demanding circumstances of the Nassau County Stadium in the United States, Rishabh Pant delivered some of the tournament’s most valuable knocks by an Indian player. He was equally impressive behind the wickets, collecting 13 catches and stumping to end with 14 dismissals, the highest by a keeper in a single T20 World Cup.

He plays 20-30 balls practically every time but just scores runs and balls, which will benefit no side in T20. Even 25 out of 10 balls will be quite good in this style. The Delhi Premier League (DPL) T20 was formally launched on Saturday with a lavish opening ceremony at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The event was a magnificent affair, with music star Badshah and actress Sonam Bajwa taking the spotlight and keeping the audience riveted to their seats. In the opening DPL game on a flat deck, Pant is 24 of 27. This is not the IPL or T20I. This is a state Twenty20 league. Rishabh Pant has now won the T20I World Cup for India, and here he is. He can’t play spin at all. And this is not good news for ICT.

Vansh Bedi (47 not out off 19 balls) and Lalit Yadav (34 not out off 21 balls) gave the finishing touch, propelling Purani Dilli-6 to 197/3 in 20 overs. The South Delhi side came out firing, with Priyansh Arya (57 off 30), Sarthak Ray (41 off 26), and skipper Badoni (57 off 29) leading the team to a three-wicket victory with five balls left. Shubham Dubey, a medium-pacer, delivered a short delivery to Rishabh Pant, who got down on one knee to hit a lap shot to backward square leg that went all the way for six.

Rishabh Pant is referred to as a match-winner, yet his performance in white-ball cricket is far from exceptional. Despite having a T20 strike rate of close to 140 against spinners, Pant has previously demonstrated his weakness against them. Earlier in IPL 2024, when Pant returned to competitive play for the first time since his automobile accident in December 2022, he scored at a strike rate of 155.40, but that statistic fell to 119.5 against spinners.
