Maresca defended his choice of club captain for Chelsea after there was tons of critique and speculation surrounding the leadership abilities of this player. However, the new Chelsea manager has stated that he is confident in his appointment as the team leader for the 2024-2025 season, as he believes the team can do well under his guidance.

Enzo Maresca has made a surprise decision when it came to announcing the ‘cap’ for the Blues for this season — Enzo Fernandez. This comes as a big surprise not only because of the questioning of his leadership capabilities from last year and this pre-season but also because of other options available on the team who could be better suited to the role and who have been at the club longer.

Also, a video surfaced in pre-season of Fernandez conducting a racist chant after Argentina won the Copa America. Not only is the new club captain possibly not the top choice of a leader, but he could be a bigot and racist who is now ‘in charge’ of a Premier League squad.

The young captain is just 22 years old, reflecting that Maresca might not have any other players who reflect the values that he wants in his team. The youngster, who is now captain, wore the armband during their opening day against Manchester City on Sunday — a game that saw the Blues start their season with zero points after a comfortable 2-0 win by City.

The video, which went viral after the Argentinian squad all got in trouble for their participation, showed racist chants from players that questioned the ‘heritage’ of the French players and made fun of Colombia after Argentina beat them in the Copa America final. The video indicated that because some of the French players were of different descent or African American, they were not ‘French’. Not only is this insensitive, racist, and prejudicial, but it creates a harmful narrative in the footballing world.

Maresca was forced to apologize for his participation in the video after it made the rounds online. Even his teammate, Fofana, called the video ‘uninhibited racism’. We bet that could make for an awkward dressing room after Maresca announced the new captain.

Many fans, pundits, and other players wondered why Maresca would choose Fernandez to be the captain of the team.

Enzo is one of the captains of this team, he is not the only one. We have Reece [James], we have some more captains. The reason why is I can see his teammates recognize him, like a reference, as a captain, and we were already captains in the preseason when we replaced Reece in the game. All of us make mistakes. It’s important to recognize Enzo made a mistake, recognise the mistake and it’s finished.

Let’s hope that he’s right. Chelsea lost in their opening match thanks to one goal from Haaland and another late on in the game by Kovacic. Chelsea and Maresca next face off against Servette in the Europa Conference League, followed by a league game away against Wolverhampton.
