Tigers vs. Cubs DFS Start 'Em Sit 'Em| August 20, 2024

The Tigers (61-64) come into this one with momentum at their back, winners of six of their last seven games -- including a wild come-from-behind victory over the Yankees in the Little League Classic on Sunday night. Meanwhile the Cubs (61-64) come in reeling a bit, losers of four of their last six contests. Their offense has been stagnant -- scoring a total of just nine runs over their last five games.

Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago Cubs DFS Start 'Ems

Here are a few of the players that we are leaning on heavily in this game. These players are in a good spot to put together a solid performance and have a favorable matchup.

Kerry Carpenter ($4.1K DraftKings and $3.0K Fanduel)

Carpenter has been terrific when healthy this season, hitting .279/.331/.588 with 11 homers and 34 RBI over 183 plate appearances through his first 55 games. That power didn't dissipate during his time on the injured list, as Carpenter has cranked three homers and driven in five runs over five games in his return from the injured list.

He has averaged 10.4 DK points and 13.8 FD points since his return and is in a position for a monster night for DFS on Tuesday against Cubs' right-hander Javier Assad at Wrigley Field.

Ian Happ ($4.5K DraftKings and $3.4K Fanduel)

The 30-year-old slugger has been on a power binge as of late, crushing five homers over his last nine games. He gets a tough matchup against Tigers' bulk left-hander Bryan Sammons on Tuesday evening.

But contrary to popular belief Happ has been much better from the right side this season -- hitting .263/.324/.525 with seven homers and 22 RBI in 108 plate appearances against left-handers this season. Even in a tough spot, that makes Happ a viable option for DFS purposes on Tuesday.

On the flip side of things, here are a few of the players we are sitting in this one.

Spencer Torkelson ($4.2K DraftKings and $2.8K Fanduel)

Some will simply look at the name and think that the former top overall pick is still the 31-homer, 94-RBI force that lit the world on fire over the second half of the 2023 season. He's not that guy anymore. Tokelson has spent the majority of the 2024 campaign at Triple-A Toledo, returning to the Tigers this past Friday.

While he walked more during his time at Toledo, he still exhibited a strikeout rate north of 30 percent and should continue to be avoided in all formats -- especially DFS with his absurd cost on DK.

    Pete Crow-Armstrong ($3.0K DraftKings and $2.7K Fanduel)

While the 22-year-old rookie outfielder continues to see regular playing time against left-handed pitching, he hasn't taken advantage of the opportunity -- hitting just .200/.238/.250 with zero homers, two RBI and four stolen bases in 42 plate appearances against same-sided hurlers.

Bryan Sammons looks like a particularly difficult matchup for Crow-Armstrong on Tuesday night and he's likely to hit near the bottom of the Cubs' lineup. He's an easy player to avoid for DFS purposes on Tuesday.

Total Apex Lock of the Game

Parker Meadows ($3.3K DraftKings and $2.8K Fanduel)

Parker Meadows has been sizzling at the plate since returning from the injured list, slashing .348/.362/.565 with a homer, five RBI and five stolen bases in 11 games. He has averaged 11.1 points per game on DraftKings and 13.7 points per game on Fanduel during that impressive stretch.

He gets a nice matchup against right-hander Javier Assad on Tuesday evening should flourish in the hitter-friendly confines of Wrigley Field. He's a strong option for DFS purposes on Tuesday.

Total Apex Fade of the Game

Isaac Paredes ($4.3K DraftKings and $3.0K Fanduel)

Some will see auto-click on Paredes in a matchup against a left-handed bulk reliever -- thinking that he's going to hit one out and not putting enough respect on the name of Bryan Sammons. That's not a wise idea though. For one, Paredes has really struggled since joining the Cubs -- slashing a putrid .153/.250/.305 with just two homers, eight RBI and a 12/6 K/BB over 68 plate appearances in his first 17 games.

Also, Sammons has been extremely stingy this season, posting a minuscule WHIP of 0.696 across 18 2/3 innings. He has been victimized by the long ball -- with four of the nine hits that he has allowed being home runs -- but that seems more like noise and an unsustainable rate than an actual trend. The more likely scenario is that he winds up with an empty 0-for-3 and craters those DFS rosters that he's a part of.

    Conclusion

Overall, there's not a whole lot of excitement going on in his game for DFS, just a couple of one-off bats that could make things fun. With the way that the Tigers have been playing -- and their low costs (especially on DK), I don't completely hate stacking up their left-handed bats against Javier Assad -- getting Parker Meadows, Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Colt Keith and Jace Jung all in play.

That's better served for those that are multi-entering GPP tournaments though and not recommended for single-entry contests.
