Khamzat Chimaev: Sean Strickland’s Greatest Threat After UFC 305

Khamzat Chimaev is an undefeated and famous Russian UFC fighter who always looks forward to fighting anyone in the Octagon. He wasn’t able to fight in UFC 304 and UFC 305 because of the health issues he suddenly faced after having a meal a few hours before the fight.

Sean Strickland was the middleweight Champion but lost his title to the African fighter Dricus du Plessis in UFC 304. However, Sean and his head coach don’t accept the defeat and look forward to fighting du Plessis again in UFC 306 or UFC 307. Khamzat Chimaev is returning as the biggest threat to Strickland, but Sean is focused on earning his title back from the African.

Sean Strickland Losing the Title

Sean Strickland might not get a guaranteed chance to fight Dricus Du Plessis for the title. Strickland quickly asked for a rematch after his impressive win over Israel Adesanya at UFC 305. But even though he’s eager, the American might not get his chance at the prized belt because many other fighters are waiting for their turn. One of them is Khamzat Chimaev. On the Good Boy/Bad Boy podcast, former UFC champion Daniel Cormier suggested a scenario that might not be favorable for Sean Strickland.

Daniel Cormier has an interesting point of view on the ‘Borz’ scenario. As we know, Khamzat Chimaev is still undefeated in the UFC. So, if he manages to beat a tough opponent like Robert Whittaker, it will only strengthen his position as a strong challenger.

DC believes that if Khamzat Chimaev can defeat Robert Whittaker, there’s a good chance that ‘Borz’ will be chosen to fight Dricus du Plessis next. Cormier shared his thoughts on this. “If Khamzat wins, now you have something to worry about truly… That would make me concerned if I’m Sean Strickland… Sean did the right thing on Saturday. He jumped down DDP’s throat, ‘Hey, it’s me and you next, right? Don’t go running.’ But he shouldn’t feel so good.”

Situation on Loss of Khamzat Chimaev

On the other hand, things might still not look good for Strickland even if Chimaev loses. After impressive wins over Paulo Costa and Ikram Aliskerov, Robert Whittaker has made his way back into the middleweight title picture. If Whittaker beats Chimaev, his chances of becoming the top contender will only increase.

Adding to Strickland’s troubles, Dricus du Plessis mentioned that Whittaker was more deserving of a shot at the champion. However, Du Plessis also noted that Strickland’s ‘only saving grace’ is that he went the full five rounds in UFC 297. Meanwhile, Strickland wasted no time in calling out Du Plessis and even expressed his wish to fight him in Los Angeles.
