49ers Journeyman Quarterback Looking to Lock Up Roster Spot

The San Francisco 49ers have been riddled with quarterback injuries in the Kyle Shanahan era. It is vital for their success that they have a serviceable backup. They hope to have found that this season in Josh Dobbs. Dobbs has been solid in his first two preseason games for the 49ers this year.

Dobbs was one of the best stories in football last year as he bounced around the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals until landing with the Minnesota Vikings. He had a couple of good performances before the Vikings decided to turn the page. Dobbs is now in San Francisco as Brock Purdy’s backup. What can we expect out of Dobbs this season?

For the 49ers this preseason, Josh Dobbs has thrown for 279 yards on a 63% completion percentage with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception. He has tacked on another 31 yards rushing. His most impressive play thus far was a 13-yard first-down run versus the New Orleans Saints. Dobbs was flushed out of the pocket and maneuvered through multiple defenders across the field to pick up the first. Dobbs led the lone touchdown drive for San Francisco in the 49ers 16-10 win.

The 49ers don’t need Dobbs to be a superhero, they just need him to be able to step in and get the ball to playmakers in the event he is called upon during the season. Dobbs showed last season that he is capable of winning a game for a team when needed.

Dobbs was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Minnesota Vikings in the middle of last season. Just days after being traded, the Vikings needed Dobbs to sub into the game. Not knowing parts of the playbook or even other players’ names, Dobbs came up big and led Minnesota to a win. Dobbs’s ability to quickly adapt must have stood out to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and why he wanted Dobbs.

Josh Dobbs’s Journey from Tennessee to the 49ers

The 29-year-old Dobbs has had quite the journey. Since being drafted in the 4th round by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the University of Tennessee in 2017, Dobbs has played on 9 different teams in the NFL. Throughout his career, he has made 21 appearances and has thrown for 2,970 yards and 15 touchdowns.

His nickname is “The Passtronaut” because Dobbs also received a college degree in aerospace engineering in addition to being a quarterback at Tennessee. He established an organization called “The ASTROordinary Dobbs Foundation” which is a nonprofit organization that aims to support the community through educational, economical, professional, and recreational empowerment.

Josh Dobbs is impossible not to root for. He has battled through adversity his whole career. Now with the San Francisco 49ers, Dobbs looks to lock up the backup quarterback spot before the regular season gets underway.
