Lara Croft Stars in Netflix’s 2024 ‘Tomb Raider’ Animated Series

Lara Croft has been one of the biggest female action heroes to date. From her adventures in popular video games to the 2018 film series featuring Angelina Jolie. And once again, Lara Croft has returned in Netflix’s new trailer for the Tomb Raider anime. Set to arrive in October 2024, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft already seems action-packed. Let’s dive a bit deeper into the upcoming adult animated series.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Plot

Written by Tasha Huo, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft picks up after the video game series. This includes Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018). Fans will see Lara returning to the Craft Manor when a dangerous artifact is stolen. Unbeknownst to Lara, the thief has an unlikely connection to her. As she pursues the perpetrator, Lara is thrown into a worldwide adventure where she is forced to confront herself. It is up to her to decide what type of hero she wants to become.

Tomb Raider Anime Cast and Crew

While Powerhouse Animation will oversee the series’ animation, Tasha Huo will head the writing team. Joey Soloway will be directing some of the episodes, while Legendary Television will produce the show. Powerhouse Animation is well-known for its fantastic job on the Castlevania anime and Masters of the Universe.

In terms of casting, Hayley Atwell will voice the main character, Lara Croft. Atwell is best known for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has also appeared in popular films, including Peter Rabbit 1 (2018) and 2 (2021) and Cinderella (2015). Additionally, Earl Baylon, who played Jonah in the gaming series, will reprise his role as the character in the anime.

The remaining cast includes Allen Maldonado, who appeared as Curtis in the comedy series Black-ish. He has also seen roles in Friday After Next (2002) and Dope (2015). Maldonado will be playing the role of Zip, an old friend of Lara’s from the video games.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Teaser Trailer

Upon the release of the official trailer for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the anime is set to air on October 10, 2024. With this around the corner, many fans have been ecstatic about the return of the legendary action hero. And judging from the trailer, the anime will live up to the nitty-gritty of the Survivor gaming series.

Although just a teaser, the trailer shows an adult version of Lara Croft returning to the Croft Manor. When she is first introduced in the 2013 game, she is a student trying to find the lost island of Yamatai. By the third installment, Lara has adopted an obsession similar to that of her father, which results in the deaths of hundreds. By the end of the game, Lara manages to avert the apocalypse and save the world.

For many fans, the major flaw was found in the lack of character development towards the end of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Instead of exploring how Lara could learn from the hundreds of deaths she caused, the story focuses on the action instead. It made for a very anti-climactic ending. The Tomb Raider anime, continuing from this point, could make up for this. At first glance, the trailer already shows glimpses of a darker plot line. One snippet shows Lara with a backdrop of fire, staring down at the blood on her hands. Another has her grabbing at the ghost of a person who disappears in her arms. While these segments don’t give much away, they could be telling a much more sinister story.

    Final Thoughts

Overall, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft holds a lot of potential in terms of world-building and action. Building off of the Survivor trilogy was a smart move by Netflix, allowing gaming and anime fans to enjoy the series together. Based on the animation, cast, and strong production, the anime is a success waiting to happen.
