WCA to Review ‘Broken’ Global Structure of Cricket

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has formed a six-member group to evaluate the overcrowded international cricket schedule, which the organization regards as “broken and unsustainable” as well as “confusing and chaotic”. The WCA, formerly known as FICA, wants to establish a “clear and coherent structure” that would enable international cricket and domestic leagues to coexist together.

The WCA chairperson, Heath Mills, believes players have no more good hope in cricket’s leadership’s capacity to develop a unified organization. Now the WCA represents players from 16 different associations, including those from Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa. The BCCI and PCB are the only major Full Members that do not have representation at WCA, as neither has an active player association.

Cricket’s Worldwide Players‘ Association claims there is “no clarity” on the relationship between international and domestic cricket. The WCA has formed a committee comprising former players. As well as leaders from sports broadcasting and governance to conduct its study. They include Tom Harrison, the former chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and Sana Mir, who has represented Pakistan more than 200 times.

The group met for the first time in England last month, and its suggestions are expected to focus on establishing distinct slots for international and franchise cricket before the end of the year. Heath Mills, CEO of the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association and WCA Chair, stated that members of the organization had “virtually given up hope” that a reasonable schedule could be developed.

“We are fortunate that cricket is spoilt for choice and has three core formats across both the international game and domestic leagues,” Heath said. “However, to date, the game’s leadership has collectively failed to come together to establish a clear and coherent global structure in which they can coexist. The players deserve a say on the future of the game and want us to start putting forward some solutions to known issues.”

Concerns Over Scheduling and Player Well-being

According to figures revealed earlier this year by the Professional Cricketers’ Association, 81% of its members think the present schedule is detrimental to their physical health. Whereas, 62% are concerned about the emotional toll. Last month, England’s Test captain Ben Stokes also highlighted the congested schedule as something that does need to be addressed.

Stokes said: “Who knows what international cricket is going to look like, with all the franchise stuff that is going on as well. It does need to be looked at. I don’t think anyone can put their hand on their heart and know what cricket is going to look like in even two years.” Paul Marsh, CEO of the Australian Football League Players’ Association and son of former Australia wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh, also serves on the WCA committee.
