Jaguars Make Critical Offensive Signing Ahead of 2024 Preseason Finale

Multiple outlets have reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars signed QB EJ Perry to their preseason roster. The news comes after HC Doug Pederson announced that QB CJ Beathard (groin) will not play in the team’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons. After Mac Jones’ performance against the Buccaneers last week, this could mean Beathard’s time as the Jaguars’ backup is nearing its end.

The Jaguars’ Offense Must Use its Reps in Atlanta Wisely

While EJ Perry’s signing was made to ensure the Jaguars have enough players to compete in Friday’s game, the coaching staff still has to divide the QB room’s repetitions effectively. Jacksonville’s offense experienced a bit of turnover this offseason, and the team’s contest against Atlanta is the last chance to correct any mistakes before Week 1’s game against the Miami Dolphins. This means EJ Perry probably won’t receive a lot of playing time unless the coaching staff wants to protect Trevor Lawrence and Mac Jones as much as possible. With Beathard’s injury serving as a reminder of what could happen if the coaching staff isn’t careful, this could very well be the case.

Perry Has Experience Wearing a Jaguars Uniform

Jacksonville originally brought Perry into the organization in May of 2022. Since then, the young QB has been waived from the team and signed to the practice squad multiple times. Whenever he wasn’t in the NFL, Perry was playing for the Michigan Panthers in the USFL and UFL. Perry is a fan favorite among Panthers fans because he starred in the exhilarating comeback that helped Michigan qualify for the final edition of the USFL playoffs. While he won’t be expected to do the same thing in this stint with the Jaguars, it will be interesting to see how much the Brown University product has developed.

Final Thoughts

In the big picture, EJ Perry’s signing doesn’t mean much. CJ Beathard’s groin injury introduces a set of problems that a third-string QB in the preseason is unlikely to solve. If Jacksonville keeps three signal callers on the active roster, the depth chart should prioritize Trevor Lawrence as the starter and Mac Jones as the primary backup.

It would be nice for Doug Pederson to let Perry put some good film out there, but the Jaguars have been tinkering with the bottom end of their roster all preseason. This means Mac Jones could get more reps than expected to give players on the roster bubble a better look. After all, Jones played the majority of last week’s preseason game, so the same thing occurring in Atlanta is not outside the realm of possibility.
