Andrea Antonelli Set to Receive Rookie Outing at F1 Italian GP by Mercedes

Andrea Antonelli is now preparing for his first ‘official’ F1 test drive with Mercedes at the Italian Grand Prix on August 30 in Monza. The young Italian’s birthday is this Sunday and it’s expected that he will replace Lewis Hamilton in 2025 when the Brit will be driving for Ferrari. This FP1 session is a part of the qualification process and in case of a positive result, Antonelli will join Mercedes’ F1 team.

Andrea Antonelli has been readying for the overtures with a series of private tests in Mercedes’ W13 and W14 F1 models this year. This will be his first exercise on the F1 track with the Mercedes on the designated Monza session. According to Motorsport. com, this FP1 session is one of the required rookie driver sessions that teams have to complete. This opportunity will assist Mercedes decide on whether to promote Antonelli into their 2025 racing team where he is expected to form a team with George Russell.

In the Monza session, it is expected that he will be taking a spin in Hamilton’s W15 F1 car in the companied of his race engineer Peter Bonnington. Bonnington, who has just joined from Team Caterham as Mercedes’ head of race engineering, will be reporting to him, with whom he became acquainted during a Pirelli tire test in the aftermath of the Belgian Grand Prix. This involvement is even more marked as Bonnington has been recently promoted and is not only a race engineer but also has some managerial responsibilities on the team.
