Ronda Rousey Thinks She Rescued UFC, MMA

Before Ronda Rousey started her Strikeforce career, she only fought two times in her MMA career then went into the UFC. Shortly thereafter, she rose through the ranks. Rousey became one of the most prominent figures in MMA and promoted the women’s involvement. UFC president Dana White once declared that women would never fight in the Octagon. Rousey knocked him and the MMA world sideways. In 2011, she was just an inexperienced fighter who wanted to make an impact on White.

    Ronda Rousey and Her Comeback

Rousey said that she thought it was her job to capture White’s attention. She wasn’t quite sure whether women’s MMA was in danger. After UFC bought Strikeforce, it did seem rather uncertain. Before Rousey came onto the scene, Gina Carano was the biggest name in women’s MMA.

However, Carano stepped in 2009 after losing to Cris Cyborg by a first-round TKO. Even though she left, Strikeforce continued to hold women’s fights. Rousey knew the Strikeforce purchase could change everything. From that point on, she was determined to get noticed. Her powerful finishes and cocky attitude were noticed by the fans. Whenever she spoke, it helped make her a superstar.

    Women’s Division in UFC

Even after White agreed to include women’s fights, Rousey still felt uncertain about her position. Initially, there was only one women’s division, led by Rousey. Even when officials decided to include more women fighters and divisions, Ronda Rousey was not sure if her work was done.

Today, the federation has three women’s divisions. While no female fighter has become as famous as Rousey, there is a lot of top talent. Rousey reminded current UFC fighters, both men and women, that their responsibility goes beyond just training and competing. The reason she was able to persuade White to include women was because she attracted so much attention.

Rousey believes more fighters need to realize their job involves much more than just fighting. Cris Cyborg does not agree with Rousey. She believes that Ronda has not fought a lot of fights. And even the fights that she fought, she only won 75 percent of them. Cyborg said, “Does Ronda Rousey realize she only has 8 fights in the UFC and only won 75 percent of them?”

    Final Thoughts

Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey are both great fighters. Both of them have helped promote the women’s division. Rousey is more famous than any other fighter in the division. It opened the doors for her to have a career with the WWE. But her time there has been somewhat successful. The company put her in a position to succeed, booking her as a champion and heel. Yet these days, Rousey is staying away from the Octagon and wrestling ring. She’s happy to be separated from that world and raise her young child.
