Jack Wilshere Names His Greatest Premier League Midfielder

Jack Wilshere believes that Man City possesses a star that’s better than Patrick Viera. Man City have had several stars who played for them and also played for Arsenal. Players like Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, and others have played for both clubs.

A respectable Arsenal legend who has also done it is to have Patrick Vieira. The Frenchman had up to 451 appearances altogether for the two teams. He initially spent nine years at Arsenal, this was between 1996 to 2005. After he started with half a season, then proceeded to use a full season the following season in Man City. This ranged from January 2010 down to July 2011. Another former Arsenal Midfielder has now claimed him and City’s midfielder.

Jack Wilshere Chooses Kevin De Bruyne Over Patrick Vieira

During a video on the Daily Mail Sport TikTok channel, Wilshere participated in a winner-stays-on challenge. This included him choosing between some past and present top-flight midfielders, and whoever he feels is better between them. When it was between Viera and De Bruyne, Wilshere picked the City’s star. This over the retired Gunner’s midfielder who was influential in their unbeaten Premier League trophy win.

Viera’s Legacy in the Premier League

Viera had 405 appearances for Arsenal. The Frenchman had scored 32 goals and provided 50. He was also able to win three Premier League titles. De Bruyne on the other end has about 102 goals and 170 assists while winning six Premier League trophies. This seems to dwarf Viera’s overall achievement. Nonetheless, there’s still a big difference between the two players, as Viera was more of a defensive midfielder, and De Bruyne played more directly behind forward. This eventually makes them a bit less comparable.

A better comparison would have featured between him, Rodri, Yaya Toure, or other players who specialize in that holding midfield role. In a recent talk with Man City star Rodri, the Spaniard considered DeBruyne as the greatest of all time. This showed similarities to the perspectives of Jack Wilshere. Especially on how they value the Belgian star.

How Arsenal Fans Might React to the Comparison

A lot of Gunners fans will be disappointed to see such a view of Wilshere choosing De Bruyne ahead of Viera. Most likely most Arsenal fans would even prefer to choose Mesut Ozil ahead of the 33-year-old, knowing that they play similar roles compared to Viera. KDB and Ozil are known for honing the 10 role, which is also considered as the attacking midfield role, while Viera was considered a 6, or defensive midfielder.

However, it’s understandable that the Englishman made his choice, being that the Belgian has a lot of goals and assists to his name, alongside trophies.
